And Lucasfilm Enter Publishing Agreement Scholastic Inc., publishers of a variety of Star Wars Trilogy books and a series of "Star Wars Journals," has licensed the rights to publish an extensive line of digest children's books based on future Star Wars films from Lucasfilm Ltd., it was announced by Barbara Marcus, Executive Vice President, Scholastic Books. The new agreement gives Scholastic exclusive rights to juvenile digest titles based on the three new Star Wars movies, the first of which is scheduled to be released in May 1999. "Our relationship with Lucasfilm has been wonderful, and this new agreement reaffirms our commitment to the Star Wars saga with a focused publishing agenda built on Scholastic's proven strength in digest novels and continuity programs," explained Marcus. "We are incredibly excited about continuing this relationship with Lucasfilm into the next millennium!" Under the new agreement, Scholastic will publish three sets of Star Wars books in the digest format, including novelizations of all three, films in the next Star Wars trilogy, additional titles in the Star Wars Journals, and a new, original junior fiction series. The new books represent an ongoing series that will be published over a period of years coinciding with the release of the next three Star Wars movies, which are prequels to the original Star Wars Trilogy. DiveIn and Student Net Announce Partnership The city-based Web service DiveIn and Student Net Publishing's Student.Com announced an exclusive content partnership that will provide college students in ten major metropolitan areas with a city-specific version of Student.Com, an independent website with original daily content to serve all aspects of college life. Through this partnership, college students living in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Portland, Seattle and the Twin Cities now have available a wide range of local entertainment, information and communications tools tailored to them. Users can participate in online campus discussions with fellow students, or link to their college newspaper to find out about the latest campus events. Or, access DiveIn's comprehensive calendar of events to find out what's happening around town. Student.com helps students stay connected with each other. Students can find a date through "Yenta, the Matchmaker," one of the site's more popular features or write a letter to Mom by e-mail through Mom-o-Matic, an electronic form letter that can be personalized. Students can also stay in touch with old friends at nearly 500 schools through a network of over 200,000 student homepages. ESPN Magazine Announces Senior Editors ESPN Magazine Editor in Chief John Papanek announced the appointment of Jon Pessah as deputy editor, as well as the appointments of several senior editors. Pessah transitions to the new magazine after spending two years as news editor of ESPN Total Sports where he edited and assigned stories for the special issue publications. Previously, Pessah was an assistant managing editor for sports at Newsday, guiding the department to several APSE awards. Prior to Newsday, he spent nine years at the Hartford Courant as deputy sports editor and sports editor. Pessah will help administer the editorial staff and will oversee the magazine's coverage of professional basketball. The new senior editors include: Terry Egan, formerly the NHL columnist for the Dallas Morning News, joins the magazine as senior editor of hockey, auto racing and tennis. Neil Fine joins the staff as senior editor of the magazine's front-of-the-book sections and horse racing. John Hassan will serve as the magazine's senior editorial liaison to the ESPN network and will be based at ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn. Roxanne Jones joins the staff as senior editor of professional football and boxing. Pamela Miller will be the senior editor for Olympics, extreme sports and soccer. Chris Raymond, another veteran and visionary of ESPN Total Sports, comes to the magazine as senior editor of college sports. Glen Waggoner will oversee the magazine's baseball and golf coverage. ESPN Magazine, launching March 11, 1998, will utilize ESPN's award-winning variety of sports news resources combined with fast-paced, timely, in-depth commentary and opinion. Sporting a 10 x 12-inch format, the magazine will publish biweekly. ESPN Magazine is a joint venture of Disney Publishing, ESPN and Hearst. Just Sports for Women Brings Winter Olympics News to the Web Just Sports for Women, a website devoted exclusively to women's sports, is now offering free up-to-the-minute women's sports news on the Internet. The enhanced news service begins this week with extensive results, stats, previews and analysis of the women's events at the Winter Olympics, in Nagano, Japan. In addition to the previously established women's Winter Olympic sports -- skiing, skating, luge and biathlon -- the '98 Winter Olympics will mark the debut of three new medal sports for women -- ice hockey, snowboarding and curling. In the coming weeks, Just Sports for Women will add more "Sports Wire" news sections covering women's college and professional basketball, tennis, golf, soccer and track & field. Just Sports for Women is a production of Guts Inc., the privately-held Internet content company started in 1996 by photographer and multimedia producer Daniel Kron. MGM and Electronic Arts Announce New Agreement Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Electronic Arts, an interactive entertainment software company, have signed an international co-publishing agreement that will include at least the next four interactive games from MGM Interactive. The partnership teams up the strong marketing and distribution of Electronic Arts with MGM's high-profile content. Electronic Arts (EA) will be the exclusive distributor of MGM Interactive's titles in all territories except North America. The agreement covers the PlayStation(TM) and PC CD-ROM titles from MGM, initially to include the eagerly awaited WarGames, Return Fire II and the next James Bond project under license from Danjaq LLC and Eon Productions, following on the theatrical success of Tomorrow Never Dies. The first title to be released under this new partnership will be MGM's much anticipated WarGames for the PlayStation and Windows(R) 95 CD-ROM. WarGames is the modern follow up to the classic MGM film of the same name, and combines revolutionary 3D technology and the most advanced artificial intelligence to simulate a real theater of war. This product will be followed by Return Fire II, a multi-player 3D action strategy title and sequel to the critically-acclaimed original, and Rollerball, a futuristic fighting sports game based on the movie of the same name. Advanstar Digital Media Group Announces New Publisher and Digital Studio Magazine Responding to the dramatic changes in the growing digital content creation market, Advanstar's Digital Media Group is changing the name of NT Studio to Digital Studio Magazine. To help lead Digital Studio into the future, Lou Wallace, founder of DV Magazine and Digital Magic joins as publisher of both Digital Studio and PC Graphics & Video. Just as NT Studio's editorial featured professional digital content production on the Windows NT platform, Digital Studio will concentrate on the professional digital production market, expanding the editorial to cover cross-platform integration and workflow issues. Council on Family Health Launches Comprehensive Online Resource for Consumers and Media The Council on Family Health today announced the launch of its Web site, located at www.cfhinfo.org. The new site includes information on Council's services, educational campaigns and materials, and addresses the safe and proper use of medicines including topics such as reading the medicine label, children’s medicine dosing, drug interactions and several others. "We have designed the site to provide consumers and the media with detailed information regarding medicine use and safety. With more and more medicines available, it’s important to know how to administer them to your children as well as yourself," said William Bergman, President of Council on Family Health. "The site provides that important information and offers additional resources."
