Cinescape Launches New Entertainment Website

Designed to offer movie and television enthusiasts with the latest information from the editorial staff of Cinescape Magazine, Cinescape Online provides detailed plot summaries and industry buzz as well as thousands of pre-sorted links to official websites and the best fan pages on the Internet. Cinescape Online can be accessed at www.cinescape.com.

Cinescape Online is updated daily with the latest news and rumors from contacts throughout the entertainment industry and on the Internet. The website also features exclusive articles and interviews with stars in front of and behind the camera as well as archives of previous issues of Cinescape. The site currently offers insight from Kevin Smith discussing the trouble he encountered with studio executives when writing the upcoming Superman Reborn movie and Terrence Stamp talking about his role as the Chancellor of the Republic in the upcoming Star Wars prequels among other stories.

ESPN The Magazine Launches With Next Generation Athletes on Cover

ESPN The Magazine made its much-anticipated debut today with the cover dedicated to a new generation of athletes -- players whose skill, style and athletic ability will impact their sport in the next millennium.

The four young, leading athletes profiled are Los Angeles Laker guard Kobe Bryant by Tom Friend; Pittsburgh Steeler quarterback Kordell Stewart by Rick Telander; Seattle Mariner Shortstop Alex Rodriguez by Tim Kurkjian; and Philadelphia Flyer linesman Eric Lindros by Dan Shaughnessy.

"The time has come for a new sports magazine, and ESPN The Magazine is it," said editor in chief John Papanek. "Our cover says it all: The Magazine is about looking ahead and speaking to a new generation of sports fans."

In The Magazine's "Editor's Note," Papanek summarizes the biweekly's mission, "We will be serious about sports, but not too serious...In each issue -- in words, pictures and design -- we hope to serve up celebration, expertise, inspiration, surprise and wit."

The Magazine's features and regular departments will bring news, analysis and perspective on readers' favorite sports, both in and out of season. Launched on March 11, 1998, ESPN The Magazine is a joint venture of Disney, ESPN and Hearst.


John Kennedy, Editor-In-Chief, George, Assumes Additional Role as President

John Kennedy, Editor-in-Chief of George magazine, will assume the additional role of President, effective immediately. The announcement was made today by David J. Pecker, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hachette Filipacchi Magazines.

"As founder and co-owner of George, John's appointment to President is the natural reflection of his dedication to the magazine," said David J. Pecker. "His vision as Editor-in-Chief has been instrumental in positioning George as the largest-selling political magazine, in the nation. This new role as President, in addition to his editorial duties, will more fully integrate John into the publishing of the magazine."

"PBS TechKnow" Web Site for Kids Aims to Produce Savvy Surfers

PBS TechKnow, a Web site devoted to helping children become cyberliterate by teaching them how to make informed choices about the sites they visit, premieres today on PBS Online.

Available through the PBS Kids neighborhood, PBS TechKnow promotes smart Web surfing by engaging youngsters in activities encouraging them to examine -- thoughtfully and thoroughly -- the sites and advertisements they encounter on the Web.

TechKnow features include:

* "Get Your Web License Here" enables children to become smart netizens by taking a "Rules of the Road" quiz. The successful completion of this ten-question test earns the child a printable certificate of completion and access to an online compilation of hot sites, graphics and sounds.

* The "You Be the Judge" section demonstrates how content and design are crucial for making a great Web site.

* The "Computers in My Future" essay and Web site design contest, in which youngsters will have a chance to win a trip to American C omputer Experience (ACE) summer camps.

The contest seeks essays of 200-250 words describing how computers will change the way they children will communicate, learn, work and play in the future. Contestants will incorporate their essays into Web sites of their own design, using resources found on the PBS TechKnow site. Ten grand prize winners will receive a one-week enrollment in any of ACE's camps at 21 colleges and universities throughout the United States, as well as air transportation. The deadline for entries is April 15, 1998.

PBS Online, PBS's award-winning site on the World Wide Web, produces high-quality Web programming as it pioneers the digital convergence of television and the Internet. PBS ONLINE features more than 40,000 pages of content as well as companion Web sites for more than 200 PBS programs and specials. PBS Kids is one of the eight neighborhoods available on PBS Online.


BPI Communications Acquires Sunshine Group Worldwide

John Babcock Jr., President of BPI Communications announced today together with Robert Sunshine and Jimmy Sunshine of Sunshine Group Worldwide, the entertainment company that operates Cinema Expo International and CineAsia, publishes Film Journal International and produces ShowEast, the signing of a letter of intent that will result in BPI Communications acquiring a majority portion of the assets of the Sunshine Group Worldwide. BPI Communications publishes The Hollywood Reporter among its many other trade publications. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of March.

Sunshine Group Worldwide has been publishing Film Journal International for more than 65 years and recently spearheaded a successful effort to take the magazine international where it has now become one of the top trade magazines for cinema owners not only in the United States, but also in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Cinema Expo International, Europe's largest trade fair and convention for the cinema industry, now in its seventh year will once again take place in Amsterdam from June 15th to 18th. In 1995, Sunshine Group Worldwide expanded into the international marketplace with the creation of CineAsia, which just completed its fourth edition in Singapore. This year, CineAsia will be held in Hong Kong. It will take place December 8th to December 10th 1998 and will attract cinema owners based in the Asia/Pacific region as well as Australia and New Zealand. In the US, the Sunshine Group Worldwide has produced the annual ShowEast convention for the past 12 years, which caters to domestic cinema owners.

Managing Directors Jimmy and Robert Sunshine speak enthusiastically about joining forces with BPI, whose parent is VNU, the international publishing and information company based in the Netherlands. According to the Sunshines, "Teaming up with a powerhouse international entertainment company gives us the chance to have access to greater resources than ever before. Robert and Jimmy Sunshine and their team will continue to run all facets of the conventions and publication. The overall operation will be coordinated by Robert Dowling, Publisher of The Hollywood Reporter and President of BPI's "Film Group." Their conventions have set industry standards. This is a partnership that has tremendous potential for growth."
