Internet World Weekly Reports On the Fight to Tax E-Commerce

The March 9th issue of Mecklermedia's new Internet World weekly print publication, "The Voice of E-Business and Internet Technology," reports on the fight between the federal government and the states over a bill that would protect Internet companies from new taxes.

"The bill has the support of the Clinton Administration and most of the Internet industry," said Internet World editor-in-chief Robert Hertzberg. "In the event that it does not pass, E-commerce companies and Internet Service Providers in particular would be vulnerable to potentially painful new taxes."

The March 9th issue of Internet World also offers a look at how four of the earliest Web sites are faring in midlife, and an analysis of a new "browser war," one shaping up in the market for handheld devices. In its 'Careers' section, the newspaper reveals why Los Angeles, the site of this week's Internet World trade show, has become a center for online content creation, and in its IW Labs section, offers Webmasters ideas on how to figure out which Web server to buy. Internet World was formerly known as Web Week.

Mecklermedia Corporation, based in Westport, Connecticut, is a leading provider of Internet information through its Internet World weekly print publication, its Internet World trade shows and Internet.com at http://www.internet.com which provides daily news and information resources for the Internet community. Mecklermedia's global presence includes Internet World trade shows and licensed publications throughout Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia.

The Survey Says… People are Buying On-line

Esearch, a source for internet market research data collection, released the findings of its most recent survey on on-line shopping/buying habits. The report shows trends in on-line shopping, comparing the 1998 results from a 1997 survey on the same topic. Data was collected from nearly 3,000 netizens about their on-line buying habits.

The findings indicated that nearly 70% of the sample had conducted some type of on-line transaction; and of these, 61% had purchased a product or service. In 1997, slightly more than half the sample (52%) had conducted some type of on-line transaction and that of these, nearly all had purchased a product or service. More people are conducting transactions on-line, but the percentage of product/services buys is not increasing at the same rate. 1997 and 1998 respondents are consistent in the key reasons people are reluctant to purchase on-line, which is a lack of trust in Internet security.

Specifics for 1998 include: Almost 70% of respondents have conducted a monetary transaction on-line. Of this 70%, about 61% had purchased a product or service. The most frequently purchased items were leisure items such as books, games and toys (40%), computer hardware/software (39%), and personal items such as clothing and jewelry (23.3%). Respondents stated that convenience (44%), better deals (37%), less amount of time taken (37%), and availability of items (28%) were the reasons that prompted them to purchase on-line. Brand name items (36%) and specialty items (36%) were purchased on-line.

The questionnaire is available at http://www.esearch.com along with the topline summary. The complete report is available from Esearch for $1,500. Founded in 1996, Esearch provides on-line data collection for market research. The company maintains a list of panelists available for on-line polling, focus groups, and other research – with complete demographic information on each panel member.

As the Internet's reach spreads, even established institutions are embracing the benefits of the online world. Moderated by Professor Arthur R. Miller, the class is offered free to the public and is the first in a series of online courses that NetResponse plans to develop for The Berkman Center, a research center dedicated to the exploration and understanding of cyberspace, its development, dynamics, norms, standards, and need or lack thereof for laws and sanctions.

The general public can register for future courses free of charge at The Berkman Center's Web site (located at ). Individuals that are interested in the class, but didn't register in time, can still view the course outline and schedule, as well as the weekly hypothetical topics proposed by Professor Miller.
