Wednesday, March 18th, 1998 PriMedia Launches Energy Manager Magazine James A. Warner, president of the PriMedia Magazine Group, announced that Intertec Publishing, PriMedia's technical and trade magazine division, will launch Energy Manager magazine in July 1998 to meet the dynamic business information needs of energy producers and consumers. The magazine will target energy management executives, managers and supervisors at industrial, commercial, institutional, governmental and healthcare facilities. It will provide coverage of the business and technical subjects that will enable readers to negotiate, purchase and manage use of their electric and gas power supplies and associated equipment more effectively and efficiently. Energy Manager will be published three times in 1998 (July/August, September/October and November/December) and then will be published monthly beginning in 1999. PriMedia Inc. (previously K-III Communications), is a source of specialized information in targeted media (specialty magazines, trade magazines, consumer and business information) and education (classroom and workplace learning). Some key brands include Seventeen, New York, Chicago, Soap Opera Digest, Soap Opera Weekly, Channel One, Weekly Reader, Horticulture, World Almanac, Modern Bride and American Baby. USA Today Launches New Life Section Friday Format Beginning Friday, March 20, USA Today's Life section takes on a new look as it becomes two distinct sections The sections will be titled "Weekend Life" and "Destinations & Diversions." The format change allows for more space to be devoted to weekend entertainment and travel news. "Weekend Life" focuses on entertainment, including new movies, videos, TV shows, albums, books and computer games. The TV listings have been expanded to include Saturday and Sunday listings. "Destinations & Diversions" features expanded coverage of travel issues including travel advice and trends along with more stories on food, wine and dining out. USA Today's weekly "Test Drive" automotive column by James Healey also will be included in the new section. "This is the first major format change in our history and we're looking forward to the opportunity to give our readers an expanded entertainment and travel report each Friday," said Dave Mazzarella, editor, USA Today. Internet Job Source Magazine Launches Free Weekly E-Mail Newsletter Covering Job Hunting Online The Internet Job Source, publisher of a monthly magazine covering job hunting and the Internet, has launched a free e-mail newsletter that each week reports on employment news and reviews useful job hunting sites around the World Wide Web. "We decided to launch this newsletter as a service to job hunters, recruiters and new Internet users," says Joseph Shieh, Editor and Publisher of The Internet Job Source. "There is so much information on the Web that it's mind-boggling and confusing to the average person. The e-mail newsletter is sent free weekly to anyone who signs up at The Internet Job Source website. The newsletter is updated with new content each week, including reviews of top sites, news from employers and recruiters, plus a selection of four Hot Job Sites of the Week. The Internet Job Source publishes The Internet Job Source magazine, a nationally distributed publication covering job hunting online. Articles focus on news and trends on the Internet, a special section covering America Online (AOL), as well as columns by Microsoft Chairman and CEO Bill Gates. Freedom to Acquire North Carolina Weekly Freedom Communications, Inc. has signed an agreement in principle with Ste. Genevieve Newspapers, Inc. to acquire Havelock Newspapers, Inc. and Ellis Publishing, Inc., publishers of The Havelock News in Havelock, North Carolina, both companies announced. Ellis Publishing also produces The Windsock under contract with Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station in Havelock. The anticipated closing date is March 31. "The Havelock News is the only paper in our overall group that is east of the Mississippi," said Mace. "It no longer fits in with our strategic plan. Freedom Communications was an obvious buyer since it is right up the road. And, it made me feel better to know the paper was going into very capable hands." The Havelock News is a weekly paper serving the town of Havelock, 15 miles east of New Bern. Freedom Communications will operate the paper as a separate company, with offices and staff located in Havelock. It will operate under Freedom's Eastern Newspaper Division. Freedom Communications, Inc. is a diversified media company consisting of broadcast television stations, newspapers and magazines. The company's newspaper division publishes 27 daily newspapers, six of which are in North Carolina, and 35 weekly publications. The newspaper's combined daily circulation is more than one million subscribers. Freedom's flagship newspaper is the Santa Ana, Calif.-based Orange County Register with a circulation of 360,000. Bitstream Launches Web Typography Center Bitstream Inc. announced the launch of www.truedoc.com, a web typography center. The new site provides a free set of dynamic fonts, complete with step-by-step instructions on how to use them in individual web pages. Also included are information and tutorials on how web typography works and how to use fonts in web pages. The site also provides examples; "test drive" on dynamic fonts, Tips on Type; and frequently asked questions (FAQs). The site was announced at the Seybold Seminars show in New York. Dynamic fonts, one of the latest developments in HTML design, put more creative power in web authors' hands. Instead of relying on the default fonts that users have in their browsers -- fonts like Times New Roman and Arial--web authors can now create pages using the fonts they have on their systems, with the assurance that those pages will display in a browser with their font formatting intact. "As one of the first independent digital font foundries, Bitstream strives to provide quality typeface designs and leading-edge font technologies to address the needs of the graphics communications industry," said Jim Welch, Director of Worldwide Marketing of Bitstream's Type and Technology Division.
