Friday, March 20th, 1998 Engineer/Journalist Katherine Derbyshire Joins Semiconductor Online VerticalNet Inc. has announced that Katherine Derbyshire, formerly chief technical editor with Solid State Technology magazine, has joined the Process Group as Managing Editor, Semiconductor Online. Derbyshire will take primary responsibility for the editorial content and existing and future interactive features of the site. Semiconductor Online is one of 16 "sites of interest" that have been started by VerticalNet in the past three years. Like the others, Semiconductor Online provides news reporting, technical articles, product and service directories, discussion forums and other interactive elements. "The semiconductor industry is one of the most dynamic of all manufacturing industries, and our belief is that industry technologists and vendors have only begun to scratch the surface of what the Internet can offer," said Mike Hagan, vice president of VerticalNet. "With Katherine coming on board, we will be able to significantly increase the value that Semiconductor Online brings to this community." Before joining Solid State Technology in 1994, she had published research on high temperature superconductors, III-V semiconductors, diamond thin films, and archaeological bronzes. She has contributed material to a number of other publications, including Wired magazine. She won an ASBPE award for technical journalism in 1997. At Solid State Technology, Derbyshire covered lithography, etch, thermal processes, planarization, and fab automation, while providing overall technical leadership for the magazine. American Greetings Adds Clifford the Big Red Dog and Teletubbies to Licensed Products American Greetings announced it has added the children's classic book series, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and Teletubbies, a popular new British phenomenon, to its stable of successful licensed properties for greeting cards and other social expressions products. In separate licensing agreements, American Greetings will have rights to the properties through the year 2000. Clifford the Big Red Dog was licensed from Scholastic Inc., and Teletubbies from New York based itsy bitsy entertainment company. American Greetings plans to introduce Clifford the Big Red Dog juvenile products early next year, beginning with Valentine's Day Cards. American Greetings will offer a complete array of seasonal and birthday/everyday cards, gift wrap, gift bags and stickers for both licenses. Norman Bridwell's classic character, Clifford the Big Red Dog, celebrated his 35th anniversary with over 56 million books in print. The books detail the escapades and antics of the precocious giant (20-feet tall) and his owner, Emily Elizabeth. In 1999 an animated sitcom is being planned. Teletubbies is a popular British television series and license property targeted to the preschool market. Beginning April 8, 1998, Teletubbies is coming to the U.S. and will be aired on Public Broadcast Systems (PBS) five days weekly. Twinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po have tummies which become TV screens and light up, bringing them pictures and voices of happy children from the real world. Business Resource Center and Entrepreneur Magazine Help Would-Be Business Owners Get a Headstart Khera Communications, Inc. has annoucned that visitors to the Business Resource Center Web site can tap into Entrepreneur Magazine's Franchise 500 database online to research companies before investing their money. The database includes an in-depth snapshot of the franchise opportunity, including typical start-up costs, franchise fees, royalties, and contact information. "This information, and the other free resources on the site, can save entrepreneurs a great deal of time and help them focus their search to find the right opportunity, whether it's opening up a local McDonald's, a home repair service, or a technical staffing office," says Business Resource Center publisher Raj Khera. The Business Resource Center was launched in the fall of 1994, one of the first business-related sites on the Web. Today, over 1,000 other Web sites, including many large corporate sites, magazines, business schools, and non-profit organizations, link to the site as a source for insightful information to help small businesses grow. Tilton Appointed Editor-in-Chief of Chemical Market Reporter Helga Tilton, Ph.D, has been named editor-in-chief of Chemical Market Reporter effective with the issue of March 23, 1998. She has been managing editor of the newspaper since 1996. Chemical Market Reporter is the publication of record for the worldwide chemical industry. Founded in 1871, it has been published every week since by Schnell Publishing Company, New York City. Dr. Tilton joined CMR in 1986 writing on drugs and fine chemicals, later adding coverage of inorganics. She is well known to the industry as the developer and editor of the paper's market-driven, in-depth Focus Reports, special separate publications appearing in CMR seventeen times a year. Dr. Tilton began her professional writing career as a freelancer reporting on cultural trends for U.S. and European publications. She earned her Ph.D at New York University, after studying journalism and literature there and at Columbia University, preceded by her initial exposure to the subject of chemistry in Frankfurt, Germany.
