Monday, March 30th 1998 Medical Tribune and U.S. Pharmacist Join AirMedia Healthcare Channel Jobson Publishing, a leading publisher of magazines and special information services for the healthcare industry will add the content of two of its Web-based publications, Medical Tribune and U.S. Pharmacist, to AirMedia Inc.'s Healthcare Channel. Jobson becomes the latest high-profile distributor of medical information to join the Healthcare Channel, AirMedia's wireless network which broadcasts 24-hour healthcare news directly from the Internet to physician's PCs without a modem connection. Part of the New York Times Syndicate, Medical Tribune is a bimonthly online periodical targeting physicians with a wide range of articles on such subjects as healthcare legislation, clinical trial results, and focused news for family practitioners, internists, cardiologists, and OB-GYNS. U.S. Pharmacist is a monthly journal delivering articles about drug-related treatments of a variety of medical conditions, home care, business opportunities, clinical news, a pharmaceutical industry event calendar, and much more. Both Web sites will provide a broad collection of news and healthcare industry information to the Healthcare Channel. Jobson Publishing L.L.C. was established in 1958 with a single trade magazine. Sony Announces Formation of Sony Online Entertainment Sony Corporation of America and Sony Pictures Entertainment announced the formation of Sony Online Entertainment Inc. (SOE), combining the online distribution network of Sony Online Ventures Inc. and the entertainment brands of Sony Pictures Entertainment. The new company signals the next phase in the evolution of the company's online network, The Station@sony.com, with a sharpened focus on online games and gameshow entertainment that will be developed and produced in-house and by third parties. The new company, which combines the resources and assets of Sony Online Ventures Inc. (SOVI) in New York City and Columbia TriStar Interactive (CTI) in Los Angeles, will be led by President Lisa Simpson, who had been SOVI's Senior Vice President of Business Development. Richard Glosser, formerly Senior Vice President of Columbia TriStar Interactive, will be Executive Vice President of SOE responsible for overseeing the new company's overall business, marketing and advertising sales activities. Mark Benerofe, who had been SOVI's Vice President of Programming and Platform Development, will head that same function for SOE as Senior Vice President. Also announced was the addition of Chris Tice as Vice President of Advertising and Partnership Marketing for SOE. This year, The Station will announce multiplayer tournament versions of Jeopardy! Online and Wheel of Fortune Online and the debut of an online version of The Dating Game. "We're pleased that our studio's properties have become such strong attractions in the online arena," commented Andy Kaplan, Executive Vice President, Columbia TriStar Television Group, a Sony Pictures Entertainment company. "We look forward to building other shows into franchise properties online." Growth in the audience for online games, gameshows and entertainment is expected to soar, according to Forrester Research. Forrester projects the current online game population to grow to over 15 million players by the year 2000. Forrester's research indicates that online games will reach revenues of $866 million by 2000. New Web Soap Opera Starts March 29 OVERBOARD, a first-of-its-kind, comic-book style weekly Web soap opera about young people dealing with substance abuse, hits the Web on March 29. With sharp dialogue by author Eve Becker, and bold illustrations by comic book artist Dawud Anyabwile, OVERBOARD is a hip, on-target trip through the trials of adolescence. OVERBOARD will be online at wNetStation and PBS Online. Each week for 13 weeks, a new issue will be posted. Readers will be able to review past issues in an archive for three years. Fans can also go into the bedrooms of the characters, to glimpse what they're thinking and discover clues about where they're headed. Facts hotlinked from the dialogue boxes give information about cigarettes, alcohol and other drugs in an on-screen window. A bulletin board will allow readers to discuss the story, characters and substance abuse issues. OVERBOARD also includes BackCover Comix, where viewers can read real-life stories from middle school students from around the country. Thirteen stories have been chosen to appear, one a week, each illustrated by a different professional comic-book illustrator. Weider Publications Partners with AOL Weider Publications signed a one year agreement with AOL for fitnessonline to be an anchor tenant in the Sports channel and an exclusive anchor tenant in the Healthy Living channel, both under the Fitness subcategory. The anchor tenant program will expose fitnessonline and its partners to a new audience of over 11 million loyal members, allowing fitnessonline to further its mission to offer superior content and services related to health and fitness issues. fitnessonline is also announcing a licensing agreement with Video Fitness, a close-knit community on the Web. Individuals contribute 90% of the Web site's content. Video Fitness has developed a network of like-minded individuals who work together to maintain a consumer guide to exercise videos built by and for home exercise enthusiasts. Visitors go to the site to exchange goals and advice, compare notes, and arrange meetings off-line.
