Stephen J. Cannell Establishes Internet Presence

Emmy-award winning writer/creator/producer and bestselling author Stephen J. Cannell and Cannell Enterprises announced the launch of their new website located at: http://www.cannell.com. The new interactive website coincides with the release in paperback of Cannell's bestselling novel King Con (Avon, May 1998), an exciting thriller about a con artist and a beautiful prosecutor who join forces to take down a Mafia kingpin. King Con is soon to be a major motion picture from MGM with John Travolta slated to star as legendary con man Beano X. Bates.

In a starred review, Publishers Weekly says King Con is, "Smart, fast, funny and teeming with appealing characters," and Library Journal calls King Con, "Pure delight," praising its, "Wonderful characters [and] the wry humor [which] will keep readers enthralled."

The website features an excerpt of the prologue and first chapter from King Con as well as information about Cannell's other novels, Final Victim and The Plan, a look at television shows and movies produced by Cannell which include over 43 popular shows such as The Rockford Files, The Commish, Wiseguy, The A-Team and Silk Stalkings. The website also features television interviews using video on demand technology utilizing Real Player from Real Networks. Future plans for the site include online chats with Cannell and other celebrities, a TV trivia section and an online community. Cannell.com was designed by technology/design professional Kris Williams whose talents have contributed to such projects as Disney's Daily Blast, Spawn VR game, Xena VR game, and the Lost In Space website.

Cannell stated, "I'm excited about the launch of the website. I've been an avid user of the Web for some time now, and find the Internet to be a great research tool. The Internet is changing the entertainment world and Cannell Enterprises and I are pleased to launch our Internet presence."

Cannell will be appearing at the Chicago Book Expo on May 30th, 1998. Additional details about the appearance can be found on the website. BET Acquires Heart & Soul Magazine

Debra Lee, President and COO, BET Holdings, Inc. announced that BET Holdings, Inc. has purchased Heart & Soul magazine from Rodale Press Inc. Heart & Soul is a national health, fitness and beauty magazine targeted toward African American women with a circulation of 292,000. Heart & Soul will join BET's growing publishing division which includes Emerge and BET Weekend.

"The purchase of Heart & Soul magazine will add a new health, fitness and beauty component to the BET publishing family that enables us to address the many health and beauty issues facing African American women throughout the country," said Debra Lee, President and COO, BET Holdings, Inc. "We believe the strength of the BET brand combined with our marketing expertise will enable Heart & Soul to expand its circulation and deliver higher advertising value."

BET's first issue of Heart & Soul will be the July/August 1998 edition. The bi-monthly magazine was first launched in 1993 by Rodale Press, Inc. BET Holdings, Inc., is a multi-media entertainment company which owns and operates Black Entertainment Television (BET).


PriMedia Expands Outdoor Recreation Titles with Acquisition of In-Fisherman

William F. Reilly, chairman and chief executive officer of PriMedia Inc. announced that PriMedia expanded its position in the fishing enthusiast segment of the outdoor recreation market by acquiring In-Fisherman, of Brainerd, Minn.

With the addition of the In-Fisherman titles, PriMedia reaches more than 2.2 million outdoor recreation enthusiasts with more than twenty titles including: Power & Motoryacht, Sail, Bodyboarding, Splash, Surfing, Volleyball, Boating for Women, Canoe & Kayak, Climbing, Fly Fisherman, Bowhunter, Horse & Rider, and Practical Horseman.

In-Fisherman publishes In-Fisherman and Walleye In-Sider, magazines for freshwater fishing enthusiasts, and produces In-Fisherman Television, a fishing cable program. Other publications include Catfish Guide, Walleye Guide and Bass Guide. The company also produces The In-Fisherman radio show, owns and operates the Professional Walleye Trail fishing tournaments and markets books, videos and apparel.

"In-Fisherman is a perfect PriMedia enthusiast property. We are the authoritative source for outdoor recreation enthusiasts," said Reilly. "This acquisition is an example of PriMedia's strategy of acquiring authoritative, targeted media products."


Healthcare Intelligence Network To License More Content

Healthcare Intelligence Network (HIN) has reached an agreement to license healthcare business content from Health Resources Publishing of Manasquan, NJ. The addition of Health Resources Publishing's 17 publications provide HIN with access to comprehensive healthcare business information.

AMA Launches KidsHealth Club Site

American Medical Association's new, on-line KidsHealth Club prepares parents to meet their child's changing health care needs. The new KidsHealth Club, located online at: http://www.ama-assn.org/KHClub, debuted on the Internet May 8. This new feature of AMA's consumer-focused Health Insight Web site provides free children's health information resources and interactive features.

To enroll parents can visit the KidsHealth Club site and complete the on-line membership form. There is no charge for membership and customized information starts arriving in about 1 week.

Bonnie Chi-Lum, MD, MPH, Editor-in-Chief of the AMA's Health Insight Web site, and Neil Izenberg, MD, Editor of KidsHealth at the AMA, head up the team of professional health writers, medical editors, physicians, and other experts who develop KidsHealth Club content, all of which is reviewed independently by one or more children's health experts.
