Thursday, May 28th, 1998 Media Cynic | Forum | Advertising | Classifieds | Jobs Cox Interactive Media Names General Manager of Seattle Studio Cox Interactive Media, a provider and operator of local content on the Web, announced that it has named Jackson Dell Weaver as general manager of its Seattle Interactive Studio. Weaver will lead the Seattle studio team in its efforts to build an interactive city website featuring media content plus functionality such as navigation and chat capabilities. An industry veteran with 15 years experience in media business development management, Weaver was previously general manager for Media Investment Services, a franchise brokerage business. With a background in building content for specific audiences, Weaver also served as former president for Streamline Communications, where he launched Radio Ink, a radio trade publication which became one of the most respected broadcast management trade journals in the nation. Weaver graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in journalism. "Seattle is an ideal match for Cox Interactive Media, and Jackson Dell Weaver is uniquely qualified to lead our Internet studio in the Seattle market," said Peter Winter, president of Cox Interactive Media, headquartered in Atlanta. "By working with KIRO, our Cox partner television station in Seattle, we will build a unique city Web site with a `locals-only' flavor that will offer Seattle residents interactivity, community and functionality that they won't be able to find anywhere else online." Dale Strang Named Publisher of Equip Equip, a new Ziff-Davis magazine due to launch in August, has named industry veteran Dale Strang as Publisher. Equip plans to deliver the latest product information for the digital lifestyle including PCs, satellite televisions, set-top boxes, digital cameras and DVD players. Strang, 38, moves to Equip from Ziff-Davis sister publication Computer Gaming World, where he has served as Publisher since 1996. "Dale's remarkable success at Computer Gaming World speaks for itself," said Chris Dobbrow, Executive Vice President of ZD Publishing. "His publishing savvy, knowledge of the consumer marketplace, outstanding leadership qualities, and his own personal passion for technology and its lifestyle benefits will be tremendous assets at Equip." Radical Entertainment Teams with Disney and ESPN to Launch ESPN Digital Games Radical Entertainment Ltd. (Radical), an entertainment technology company, announced an alliance with The Walt Disney Company and ESPN to introduce ESPN Digital Games, a new line of video sports games. Under the terms of the agreement with Disney Interactive, Radical will develop, publish and market ESPN Digital Games worldwide. Buena Vista Home Entertainment, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, will handle North America product distribution. "ESPN is one of the world's preeminent sports brands, having already translated exceptionally across a variety of media. Interactive entertainment is the next natural frontier for ESPN, which has become the worldwide leader in sports programming not only for television, but also in radio, home video, print, retail and the Internet," said Jan Smith, senior vice president of Disney Interactive. The games will blend Radical's proprietary technologies and realistic gameplay with ESPN's humor and personality to create a unique gameplay experience. ESPN personalities such as Stuart Scott, Dr. Jack Ramsay, Steve Levy, Gary Thorne, Dan Patrick and Kenny Mayne will provide color commentary and analysis, just as they do on the air. Casino Journal to Debut New Magazine Casino Journal Publishing Group announced the debut of a new magazine and trade show. On June 22nd and 23rd at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, the Company will produce, under the sponsorship and partnership with UNLV's International Gaming Institute, the first UNLV's Casino Ops Conference. At the trade show, Casino Journal will also debut a new quarterly magazine called Casino Ops. Casino Ops magazine is a quarterly technical journal dedicated to the efficient and effective operation of a casino and other gaming ventures, including tables games, slot machines, finance, human resources, casino marketing, MIS, Internet casinos and gaming educational opportunities. The targeted audience of this publication is casino executives, casino service companies and academians directly involved in gaming operations. Lee Uniacke Promoted to Publisher of Computer Gaming World Computer Gaming World, a Ziff-Davis publication and the industry leader in providing content for computer gamers through print and on-line media, has announced the promotion of Lee Uniacke to Publisher. An 11-year Ziff-Davis veteran with expertise in sales, marketing and market research, Uniacke, 36, has served as Computer Gaming World Associate Publisher since 1996. Previously, Uniacke held sales and marketing positions on PC Magazine and sales management positions with other Ziff-Davis publications. Uniacke replaces Dale Strang, who was promoted to Publisher of Equip, Computer Gaming World's sister publication. "Lee has done an outstanding job of overseeing the business side of Computer Gaming World as Associate Publisher," said Jon Lane, Group Publisher and Vice President of the Ziff-Davis Game Group. "He knows the game industry and he knows marketing. He was the natural choice to lead our flagship gaming publication." Southam to Acquire Saturday Night Magazine Southam announced that it will acquire Saturday Night magazine from a subsidiary of Hollinger Inc. The acquisition has been approved by a committee consisting of the independent directors of Southam. Saturday Night magazine is distributed monthly to over 400,000 households across Canada, principally through Southam daily newspapers as well as by subscription and on newsstands. "We are very pleased to have Saturday Night as a full member of the Southam family" said Don Babick, President and Chief Operating Officer of Southam Inc. "Our distribution partnership over the years has clearly been of benefit to both Saturday Night and our newspapers. We're now well positioned to build on that success." Online Magazine Devoted to Horses Around the World Field Galleries announced the Latest Addition to their website: The Joy of Horses. The website provides an online magazine covering equine related topics on a global basis. The online magazine was launched on May 19th and will be published bi-monthly. Editor Sue Wingate says: "We believe this is to be the first such magazine on the Internet and it is entirely free for people to view". Sue's aim is to bring together horse lovers from all over the world and participation by readers is actively encouraged. She is running a "Writer of the Year" competition for the best non-fiction article with a £100/$160 cash prize or £150/$240 of Field Galleries' vouchers to purchase high quality greetings cards or limited edition prints. In this first issue there are sections devoted to horse racing, heavy horses and dressage, which will become mini magazines in their own right and other specialised sections will grow and develop such as The Iberian Horse and rare breeds. New Online Investing Glossary WebFinance Inc. has announced the launch of InvestorWords, an investing glossary on the Internet. InvestorWords provides definitions for over 4,000 financial terms and includes 15,000 links between related terms. The glossary is free for all to use. WebFinance plans to co-brand and license the InvestorWords glossary to other financial websites. Tom Murcko, president of WebFinance Inc., said "InvestorWords marks the next step toward WebFinance's goal of leveling the financial playing field, by giving individual investors all the tools they need to manage their investments and personal finances." New Magazine for Individual Investors Publishes Debut Issue Financial Communications Company, Inc. announced the premiere today of Investor Direct, a new monthly magazine aimed at the growing ranks of individual investors. FCC recently bought Research -- which targets retail brokers -- and Buyside -- which is read by institutional money managers, CFO's, and sell-side analysts -- and the addition of Investor Direct creates a triad of linked publications. Investor Direct will be marketed in a non-traditional way. While the magazine carries a $5 cover price, it will not be available on newsstands. Potential readers will be invited to subscribe. FCC believes the magazine will be attractive to discount and full-service brokers and vendors of products and services for individual investors. Robert S.
