Morgan Kaufmann Acquired by Harcourt General

Harcourt General, Inc. announced that it has acquired privately held Morgan Kaufmann Publishers, a leading publisher of computer science books for the professional and college markets. Harcourt General is a global provider of educational materials and services through its publishing subsidiary, Harcourt Brace & Company.

Headquartered in San Francisco, Morgan Kaufmann was founded in 1984 and has annualized revenues in excess of $7 million. It features a library of more than 100 reference books and textbooks focusing on computer science, engineering, and information technology in such fields as databases, computer graphics, and computer networking. Among its bestsellers are some of the most widely read books in computer science including John Hennessy and David Patterson's Computer Architecture, second edition and Computer Organization, second edition and Larry Peterson and Bruce Davie's Computer Networks.

Morgan Kaufmann will join Harcourt Brace's subsidiary, Academic Press, an international publisher of books and journals in the life, physical and social sciences. Morgan Kaufmann's editorial, production and marketing staff will continue with the company at its current San Francisco location and will continue to publish under the Morgan Kaufmann imprint. Academic Press' computer publishing imprint, Academic Press Professional, will combine with Morgan Kaufmann into one business unit under the management of Michael B. Morgan, Co-founder and President of Morgan Kaufmann, who will also become a Vice President of Academic Press. Academic Press Professional's staff will continue to publish from its current location in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.


Macmillan Announces Windows 98 Titles

While 100 million individuals became Windows 95 users after its August 1995 release, Windows 98 is expected to boast two times the consumption rate of its predecessor. Microsoft is touting the new system as a leap forward in simplicity. Among the features that exemplify this: Windows 98 automatically carries out preventive maintenance in the middle of the night, crashes less frequently than Windows 95, according to Microsoft, and simplifies the peripheral connections.

Macmillan has released several titles to aid Windows 98 users. Macmillan's Windows 98 titles will range from Easy Windows 98 to the best selling reference series from QUE, Using, to the more technical Sams Publishing's Unleashed series.

Designed for beginners, Easy Windows 98 is a full-color, step-by-step tutorial that shows new users how to perform 140 of the most common Windows 98 tasks and procedures. Using Microsoft Windows 98 is a comprehensive, detailed reference to help users accomplish essential tasks quickly and easily.

With learning broken down into 24 one-hour lessons, Sams Teach Yourself Windows 98 in 24 Hours can be utilized by individuals, in seminars, training sessions and classrooms. Peter Norton's Complete Guide to Windows 98 builds on the Norton tradition of using in-depth insights plus jargon-free language. Public Safety Product News Teams With Firehouse Magazine

Cygnus Publishing announced plans to join operations of two of its top public safety publications. Firehouse magazine will align efforts with Public Safety Product News (PSPN) creating one of the largest editorial and advertising teams servicing the fire and public safety industries.

"We believe the combination of talent and expertise will have an immediate impact on both publications' bottom lines," said Bruce T. Bowling, publisher of Firehouse. Plans call for each to offer unique ad packages that will benefit advertisers for both publications. Cygnus Publishing recently purchased Public Safety Product News from General Communications gaining a solid foothold on the public and fire safety market which is estimated to spend more than 2.5 billion per year.

The joining of operations also opens the way for PSPN to participate in the Firehouse Emergency Services Expo. The Expo attracts over 350 exhibitors and more than 12,000 fire and safety personnel each year. In its 15 years, it has become the largest fire and emergency services trade show on the East Coast. It will host both the National Association of Emergency Vehicle Technicians (NAEVT) and the International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSI). irculation (ABC) to maintain strict qualification


O'Dwyer Co. Opens Web Site For PR Industry

A website with more than 100 pages of articles, PR firm rankings, job listings and other news and information of use to PR professionals and others has been opened by the 30-year-old J.R. O'Dwyer Co. The site describes the seven O'Dwyer publications and gives useful news and information to those who access it including rankings of 206 PR firms in 21 U.S. cities and by 11 specialties (high-tech, healthcare PR, etc.) and two articles on how to hire and obtain the best results from PR firms. A "Job Corner" lists PR jobs throughout the U.S. with a monthly column of advice by a PR recruiting specialist is also part of the site.

News stories, commentary and features from the weekly O'Dwyer Newsletter and monthly O'Dwyer magazine are on the site. "We will build a library of important topics for PR people that will be added to as needed," said publisher Jack O'Dwyer, who was a reporter for the Chicago Tribune and former New York Journal-American before starting his company 30 years ago.

Besides the newsletter and magazine, the O'Dwyer publications include a biweekly, Washington, D.C., newsletter; a biweekly carrying job want-ads, and directories of PR firms, corporate PR departments, and biographies of PR professionals.
