Friday, June 26th, 1998 Media Cynic | Forum | Advertising | Classifieds | Jobs Scholastic Acquires Assets of Pages Book Fairs Scholastic Corporation (announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Scholastic Inc., has acquired certain assets of Pages Book Fairs, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pages, Inc., for $10.5 million. Acquired assets include inventory, book fair cases, and U.S. customer list. Richard Robinson, President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Scholastic, stated, "We are pleased to have acquired Pages Book Fairs assets and look forward to working with Pages Book Fairs sponsors to deliver quality book fairs and services to these schools while creating additional value for Scholastic. This acquisition will allow Scholastic to significantly increase our annual number of book fairs across the United States beginning as early as this fall." Scholastic Book Fairs operates book fairs nationally, reaching more than 35 million children annually through school organized events offering wide varieties of books and products usually for a one-week period. Sponsored by school librarians and parent-teacher organizations, which use these book fairs as school fund raisers, book fairs offer children thousands of educational and pleasure-reading book titles. 12 Books Nominated for 9th Annual Gleason Awards Twelve books are finalists for the ninth annual Ralph J. Gleason Music Book Awards, it was announced by award sponsors BMI, Rolling Stone magazine and New York University. The books eligible for the top three cash prizes are: American Bandstand: Dick Clark and the Making of a Rock `n' Roll Empire by John A. Jackson (Oxford University Press); Dreaming Out Loud: Garth Brooks, Wynonna Judd, Wade Hayes and the Changing Face of Nashville by Bruce Feiler (Avon Books); Heart & Soul: A Celebration of Black Music Style in America 1930-1978 by Bob Merlis and Davin Seay (Stewart Tabori & Chang); Invisible Republic: Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes by Greil Marcus (Henry Holt); The King of Western Swing: Bob Wills Remembered by Rosetta Wills (Billboard); Louis Armstrong: An Extravagant Life by Laurence Bergreen (Broadway Books); Mansion on the Hill by Fred Goodman (Times Books); Night Beat: A Shadow History of Rock & Roll by Mikal Gilmore (Doubleday); Ramblin' Rose: The Life and Career of Rose Maddox by Jonny Whiteside (Vanderbilt University Press/Country Music Foundation Press); Soulville USA: The Story of Stax Records by Rob Bowman (Schirmer Books); That's Alright, Elvis by Scotty Moore as told to James Dickerson (Schirmer Books) and The Way You Wear Your Hat: Frank Sinatra and the Lost Art of Livin' by Bill Zahme (Harper Collins). Laurence Bergreen, John A. Jackson and Greil Marcus are all former Gleason Award winners. The three final books, selected by a committee of music critics and authors, will share $5,000 in awards funded by Rolling Stone and BMI. The first prize will be $2,500, the second prize will be $1,500 and the third prize will be $1,000. The selection committee, which reviewed more than 80 titles submitted by the each book's publishers, included chairman Robert Rolontz, Pat Baird, Anthony DeCurtis, Holly George-Warren, Chet Flippo, Nelson George, Dr. John Gilbert of NYU and David Hinckley. The three winning titles will be announced in July. The Gleason Awards are presented annually to the three books that best exemplify the standard of passionate writing and scholarship set by the late Ralph J. Gleason, the jazz and rock critic who co-founded Rolling Stone magazine in 1967 with Jann S. Wenner. Pollak, American Lawyer Media CEO, Adds Post of Publisher for New York Law Journal American Lawyer Media, Inc. (ALM) announced that William L. Pollak, President & CEO of ALM, has been named to the additional post of Publisher for the New York Law Journal. He succeeds James A. Finkelstein, who will continue as a Director of ALM, the Law Journal's parent company. The Law Journal was founded in 1888. Pollak, 42, was named CEO of ALM in March, 1998 and also serves as a Director of the company. He joined ALM following a 15-year career at The New York Times, most recently as Executive Vice President for the newspaper. While at The Times, he held a variety of marketing, advertising and circulation positions. Pollak is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School. Finkelstein has served as publisher of the New York Law Journal since 1988 and also founded the National Law Journal weekly in 1978. Both publications were acquired by ALM as part of its purchase of The National Law Publishing Company in December, 1997. Finkelstein and Boston Ventures, former co-owners of The National Law Publishing Company, intend to team up to acquire and manage major communications companies. Mayo Clinic Announces Plan to Publish a New Book Series Mayo Clinic announced that it will publish a series of soft-cover books about specific medical conditions. The first of these books will be about arthritis, offering advice and answers for the 40 million Americans who have this disease. Subsequent books will cover high blood pressure and chronic pain. Other topics under consideration include stomach problems and diabetes. ``People with chronic conditions want to learn everything they can about what they can do to feel better,'' says Dr. David E. Larson, medical director for Mayo's consumer publishing activities. ``Our goal is to help them gain knowledge so they can improve their lifestyles and live more productively and comfortably.'' Mayo will draw from the expertise and experience of its specialty medical staff to provide advice and answers from the latest medical knowledge. Mayo will publish this book series with Kensington Publishing Corp. Mayo will develop the content; Kensington will provide support for marketing, sales and distribution to retail markets. The first book in the series is expected to be available in early 1999. Business Start-Ups Creates Website for Aspiring Entrepreneurs An interactive edition of Business Start-Ups is now available at http://www.bizstartups.com.
