American Book on China To Be Published in China Big Dragon, a new American book on modern China, will be published in Chinese and made widely available in the People's Republic of China next month. Publication and mass market distribution of the book, written by American authors Daniel Burstein and Arne de Keijzer, signals a broadening of the new "Beijing spring" that is in its early stages in China. The book was among President Clinton's reading materials as he headed for China and has already landed on the desks of top Chinese leaders in its English-language edition. It has been excerpted, reviewed, and widely discussed in the Chinese media, and numerous interviews with the authors have been published as part of the runup to President Clinton's current visit. Provocative, foreign-authored books on sensitive topics have often been translated in China in the past but then usually made available only to the elite for their reference. The fact that Big Dragon will circulate in a mass market edition and be available in bookstores throughout the country is yet another positive indicator of a new openness that is evolving. "On the one hand, there are all the continuing problems with repression and the stifling of dissent we have heard so much about," said co-author Daniel Burstein. "On the other hand, in many ways, discussion and debate in China is gradually becoming wider, more diverse, and more open." The People's Publishing House, China's leading publishing house, will publish Big Dragon through its Oriental Press imprint. The book, which deals with scenarios for China's long-term future in the 21st century as well as the future of the U.S.-China relationship, was recently published in the United States by Simon & Schuster.
