Friday, July 17th, 1998 Media Cynic | Forum | Advertising | Classifieds | Jobs Conference Workshops Wed Writing to Romance The 18th Annual Romance Writers of America National Conference will take place July 29 - August 2, 1998 at the Anaheim Hilton and Towers. Some of the workshops available include: "Heroes: More Than a Million Bucks, a Stetson and Tight Fittin' Jeans", "Dances and Delight: Historical Dance for Romance Writers" and "A Q&A session with Nora Roberts... " In addition to workshops, the conference will feature two special speakers. New York Times #1 best-selling author Julie Garwood will deliver the conference's keynote address on Thursday, July 30, and Anne Stuart, best-selling author of more than 50 romances, is the conference's featured luncheon speaker on Saturday, August 1, 1998. For new writers, the conference provides sessions on writing basics, such as how to craft speech for characters in workshops like, "'Dialogue!'She Exclaimed." Beginner sessions like "From So-so to Sensational" explain how to kick-start a career, while "Fearless Creating," a workshop led by a psychotherapist, discusses the stages of the creative process. More advanced writers may attend workshops such as "Writing To Kill," about crafting murder in romantic suspense, or "What Every Writer Should Know About Taxes," a workshop led by a CPA. The 18th Annual Romance Writers of America Conference will be held in Anaheim from Wednesday July 29, until Sunday August 2, 1998. More than 1,400 published and aspiring romance novelists, literary agents and publishing executives will meet to raise money for literacy, award the best in the industry and hone their craft. Auction Universe and Wizard Entertainment Join Forces Auction Universe, an interactive marketplace, Wizard Entertainment, a publisher of magazines covering comic books, action figures, and fantasy gaming will join forces to give traders the opportunity to bid on signed comics, signed toys, lithographs and other limited edition collectibles. The affiliation will give Auction Universe customers access to merchandise and information from the Wizard Entertainment magazines: Wizard, Toyfare and Inquest. "It's always been fun to buy and sell on Auction Universe," said Larry Schwartz, President and CEO of Auction Universe. "But partnering with Wizard Entertainment raises the fun to an entirely new level." Marvel Presents a New, 'True' Beginning for Spider-Man Marvel Comics Group, a division of Marvel Entertainment Group, Inc. will make comic book history this Fall by relaunching Amazing Spider-Man #1 and Peter Parker, Spider-Man #1. Marvel will also introduce two new Spider-Man titles: Spider-Man: Chapter 1 and Webspinners: Tales of Spider-Man. Bob Harras, Editor-in-Chief, Marvel Comics Group, stated: "The relaunch of Spider-Man will be a reinvention of the original Spider-Man through the perspective of one of the most talented creative teams in the industry. Simply put, Spider-Man will return in his original form -- the character that was embraced and loved by fans 36 years ago." John Byrne (Uncanny X-Men, Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man and Avengers) will kick off the return of Spider-Man in October with Spider-Man: Chapter 1. In a 13-issue mini-series, Byrne will use his vision to retell the Stan Lee and Steve Ditko era, circa 1962-1965. Byrne will be the sole creative talent on the project.
