Friday, July 31st, 1998 Media Cynic | Forum | Advertising | Classifieds | Jobs The Green Mile Starring Tom Hanks Begins Filming The Green Mile, a Castle Rock Entertainment production based on the 1996 serialized novel by acclaimed author Stephen King, began principal photography in Los Angeles on July 20, 1998, it was announced by Martin Shafer, President of Castle Rock Pictures, and Liz Glotzer, President of Production. The film stars Tom Hanks, David Morse, Bonnie Hunt, James Cromwell, Michael Jeter, Graham Greene, Sam Rockwell, Patricia Clarkson, Doug Hutchison, Jeffrey DeMunn, Barry Pepper and Michael Clarke Duncan. Award-winning filmmaker Frank Darabont returns to the director's chair for the first time in five years to bring his second King adaptation to the motion picture screen. Darabont wrote and directed Castle Rock's acclaimed 1994 prison drama The Shawshank Redemption which garnered seven Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Picture. An extraordinary tale set on Death Row in a Southern prison in 1935, The Green Mile is the remarkable story of the cell block's head guard, who develops a poignant, unusual relationship with one inmate who possesses a magical gift that is both mysterious and miraculous. The Green Mile films in Los Angeles through early October, then travels to North Carolina and Tennessee, where production will conclude in late October. The film is tentatively scheduled for release next year through Warner Bros. Ziff-Davis Renames the Cobb Group ZD Journals Ziff Davis announced that ZD Journals is the new name for the division formerly known as The Cobb Group. In April of this year, ZD Journals relocated from Louisville, Kentucky to Rochester, NY, the headquarters of ZD Education. This change reflects the brand marketing integration efforts of Ziff-Davis and offers ZD Journals the opportunity to leverage some of the other ZD Education resources already at the Rochester headquarters. "We are excited about formalizing our integration with the Ziff-Davis organization as a whole," says Jerry Weissberg, Executive Vice President and General Manager for ZD Journals. "The name change and relocation effort enable us to share resources with ZD Education who is also in the publishing business. We will be better equipped, using some of the latest technology, and we will share expertise and costs, to ultimately better service our customers." The Cobb Group, established in 1984, was known for its software support books that evolved into a leading publisher of a comprehensive line of software-specific journals. Acquired by Ziff-Davis in 1991, The Cobb Group continued to operate under that name. The Monster Board Makes Three New Alliance Agreements TMP Worldwide announced that its Internet career center The Monster Board formed three new strategic alliances that will further bolster the company's leadership position in the critical online college marketplace. As a result of the new agreements with Future Pages, College Town U.S.A. and Golden Key National Honor Society, The Monster Board will reach an additional three million entry level candidates with job and career related information. Today's alliance announcement comes just two months after TMP Worldwide solidly established itself in the college marketplace with the acquisition of StudentCenter.com and its InternCenter, the largest online internship database. The exposure is part of the company's strategy to strengthen its position as a career portal on the Internet where people can manage their career from intern to CEO. "There's no question that tomorrow's job seekers will be the most Internet savvy ever and, unlike many first time job seekers of past generations, we believe they will begin their job searches online," said Andrew J. PriMedia Names Gary Austin Chief Operating Officer of HPC Publications William F. Reilly, chairman and chief executive officer of PriMedia Inc. announced that Gary Austin has been named chief operating officer of PriMedia's HPC Publications, adding to his responsibilities as senior vice president and director of publications. Austin is responsible for strategic planning, operations, management and revenue growth for the company's 100 publications, which include advertiser-sponsored guides for apartments, new homes, resale homes and computers. "Gary has years of experience in the advertiser-sponsored guide publishing market, and is a superior and experienced executive," said Reilly. "He has helped to make HPC Publications the leader among apartment and new home guide publishers and I look forward to the insight he will bring to this new role. Gary will continue working with Bob Metz, with whom he has already created a team with a proven track record for success." Robert Metz is president and chief executive officer of HPC Publications. Austin started with HPC Publications in 1983, as publisher of the San Antonio Apartment Guide. He went on to take charge of markets in Austin and San Antonio, Texas; Seattle; Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz. After serving as regional director for several markets in the west, Austin moved to Philadelphia to open the northeast region for HPC Publications. In 1992 Austin began managing DistibuTech, a newly-created, separate division of HPC Publications which delivers advertiser-sponsored publications in over 60 markets. In 1995, Austin assumed responsibilities as director of publications, a role in which he set numerous revenue records and nearly tripled HPC's revenue from publications. HPC Publications is a publisher of free consumer directories active in the multi-housing, new home, resale home and computer industries. These magazines are published monthly and are provided at no charge to customers.
