Tuesday, August 11th, 1998 Media Cynic | Forum | Advertising | Classifieds | Jobs Ruth Whitney Retires as Editor of Glamour Ruth Whitney will retire this fall from Glamour, the magazine she has edited for 30 years. Whitney's retirement was announced by S.I. Newhouse, Jr., chairman of The Conde Nast Publications Inc. "Ruth's achievement with Glamour has been extraordinary," Newhouse said. "She is truly one of a kind. In fact, I know of no other editor who has identified and addressed the evolving needs and interests of her readers as Ruth has done in Glamour over the years. She set the standard for Conde Nast and for magazine publishing in general." Whitney joined Glamour as editor-in-chief in 1967. Under her direction, it became the only women's magazine to win the General Excellence category of the National Magazine Awards twice, first in 1981 and again 10 years later. Glamour also won National Magazine Awards for its coverage of significant contemporary issues, including a series on abortion that ran in 1991 and another series on managed care from 1996. In recognition of her achievement in bringing a sense of social urgency and hard-hitting public service to the traditional women's magazine format, Whitney was inducted into the American Society of Magazine Editors Hall of Fame in 1996. To keep pace with the rapidly changing world faced by her readers, she introduced more than 50 regular columns and features. Under her leadership, Glamour's circulation increased by nearly a million, making it the leading fashion, beauty and health magazine for young women. Before she came to Glamour, Whitney had been executive editor of Seventeen and, prior to that, editor-in-chief of Better Living. She is a past president of the American Society of Magazine Editors and has served on its editorial board. Macworld Online Launches iMacworld Macworld Online, published by Mac Publishing, L.L.C., announced the launch of iMacworld, a destination website featuring comprehensive coverage of games, gadgets and gear for after-hour Mac users. According to Philip Dyer, iMacworld editor, the charter of the site is to provide visitors with the quintessential one-stop for all their news and buying information needs for Macintosh games, home office applications, edutainment and reference software, gadgets and personal productivity tools. "Until iMacworld, there hasn't been one single online source catering to this group of Mac users, and certainly not devoting the kind of resources we are, in terms of dedicated staff and original content and design," said Dyer. The site will be made up of a number of "special interest areas" which will include: Games, Home Office, Education, Get Connected, Gadgets and Hobby Shop. Each special interest area will feature "first looks" and product reviews, product ratings, and "how-to's," as well as have its own community with chat, message boards, email forwarding, and scheduled events. According to Matthew Rothenberg, Macworld Online editorial director, the site has been under construction almost from the moment Steve Jobs, interim CEO of Apple Computer, rolled out the iMac. "We'd been talking about how to cover gaming, gadgets, edutainment, and home office in the context of Macworld Online. Then the iMac was announced, and it was a no-brainer to launch a separate site," said Rothenberg, who also oversees MacWEEK.com. Bonnie Fuller Named Next Editor of Glamour Bonnie Fuller has been named the next editor-in-chief of Glamour, S.I. Newhouse, Jr., chairman of The Conde Nast Publications, Inc., announced. Fuller succeeds Ruth Whitney, who will be retiring. "For many years my colleagues Steve Florio and James Truman and I have admired Bonnie's creative achievements at YM, Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan," Newhouse said. "We all agreed that she would be the very best editor to follow Ruth Whitney at Glamour." "I'm very proud to take on this assignment," Fuller said today. "I've been reading Glamour since I was a teenager, and it made a tremendous impact on me. I've always been impressed by the way it's remained contemporary for so long. Its reporting on women's issues is so strong and its coverage of fashion so exciting and relevant that it is, I think, essential reading for the young working woman." Fuller comes to Glamour from Cosmopolitan, where she has been editor-in-chief since January, 1997. Earlier this year, she was named the 1998 Editor of the Year by Advertising Age. Fuller joined Cosmopolitan in June, 1996, as deputy editor working with longtime editor Helen Gurley Brown. Before her work at Cosmopolitan, Fuller was founding editor-in-chief of the U.S. edition of Marie Claire. Following its premiere in early 1995, Marie Claire was named "Start Up and Launch of the Year" by Adweek and Advertising Age.
