Houghton Mifflin Interactive Corporation (HMI) and Parable, an Internet multimedia company, announced the launch of Curious George Things on the Web. Curious George fans have access to interactive collectibles of Curious George which they are invited to freely take, share and reuse on personal Web pages or offline. "Curious George is one of the best loved characters in children's literature and multimedia," said Conall Ryan, president and publisher of Houghton Mifflin Interactive. "We are thrilled to provide this opportunity for the Internet community to enjoy Curious George." Curious George Things can be collected and shared on personal Web pages or offline using ThingCollector and ThingScreenSaver, stand-alone applications from Parable. Because Things are easily collected and shared from user to user, they can quickly proliferate to a large number of websites and drive more interaction. "The need to protect brand integrity is an obvious issue on the Internet, and Curious George is an excellent example of a classic brand that cannot be compromised. Protecting the integrity of a brand is made a non-issue with Things," said Eric Bedell, president and CEO of Parable. "By using our technology, HMI can maintain control of their intellectual property while providing fans with fun and interactive collectibles of this great character." Currently, there are seven Curious George Things located on The World of Curious George that are free for the taking. In the future, HMI plans to expand the collection of Curious George Things to include content from new HMI multimedia titles. Curious George Things are also available through Parable's ThingWorld. Report Supplies Blueprint for Media E-Commerce Sites Media organizations are jumping into the fast-growing world of electronic commerce, selling everything from pecans to peanuts, sunglasses to subscriptions and classified ads to cruises. A research report issued by The Editor & Publisher Co. shows online sales by media are in their infancy, but are growing fast. "Dozens of media Web sites are developing e-commerce, for their own merchandise and for advertisers" said Peter M. Zollman, lead author of the 71-page study. "Some of it is obvious -- radio stations selling music CDs, for example. But there's a lot of creativity, and lots of unusual and interesting products are being sold. "Several newspapers sell laminated front pages. One radio station advertiser is selling Harley Davidson sunglasses. A TV Web site offers Minnesota Twins merchandise. Experimentation is rampant -- and a lot of the experiments are working." Some key findings:
The $295 report is available through the E&P website at http://www.mediainfo.com. It is the first in a new series of E&P Research Reports about interactive media.
