Ten Tips To Make Your Resume Stand Out Online and Off

In today's wired world this means resumes that work online as well as on paper. With different types of the same resume -- the traditional paper resume, one emailed in plain text, one scannable for computers and one posted on the Web -- job seekers can have their resumes jump out on the manager's desk. Or is it on the computer desktop?

A recent study by the American Management Association (AMA) shows a watershed statistic -- 70 percent of employers use the Internet to recruit, up from 51 percent a year earlier; and half of them hired candidates that they found on the Net. The message is clear: Convert your resume to digital form right now!

"Not only can you no longer disregard the Internet in your job search," says syndicated careers columnist Joyce Lain Kennedy, "you need to master modern resume techniques to capitalize on it. In this time of transition between traditional paper and new digital resumes, successful job seekers must know twice as much about self-marketing materials as they did just two years ago."

Kennedy, author of
Resumes For Dummies, 2nd Edition (IDG Books Worldwide, July 1998) which discusses both traditional and digital resumes, says there are ten key steps that job seekers should take to their resumes ready to go, both offline and online.
  1. Use both paper and digital resumes; if a digital resume is used, take a paper version with you to the interview.
  2. Be ready for quick action with an all-purpose digital (e-mailable and scannable) resume that also looks good on paper.
  3. E-mail has overtaken the telephone as the chief business communications medium -- be ready to e-mail your resume right now! Send it within the message; forgo attachments.
  4. Get a free e-mail address from Hotmail (hotmail.com) or Yahoo!Mail (yahoomail.com). The free Juno e-mail (juno.com) doesn't even require a Net connection, just a modem.
  5. Use the right keywords for the job -- nouns describing your skills, education, experience -- to be picked out from the crowd.
  6. For digital resumes, use standard typefaces, no graphics and lots of white space; to send online, convert to ASCII plain text.
  7. For paper resumes read by humans, not computers, use white paper, good layout, minimal graphics, and professional-looking word processing and laser printing.
  8. For your best chances of being invited to an interview, do heavy research to show your job fit; know what they want in requirements show you've got it in qualifications.
  9. Keep your resume focused with a theme; include a job objective or skills summary targeted to the job you want.
  10. Be sure all your claims are believable, backed up with examples and measurable results.
