Bonnie Hill Named L.A. Times Sr. Vice President of Community Relations

Bonnie Guiton Hill has been named to the new position of senior vice president of community relations for the
Los Angeles Times reporting to Kathryn M. Downing, the newspaper's president and chief executive officer, the newspaper announced.

Hill, who has a doctorate in education and extensive experience in the public, private and nonprofit sectors, will lead efforts to expand the impact of The Times' public affairs programs.

In her new position, Hill will oversee The Times' extensive community outreach activities, including The Times Fund, which has helped at-risk children throughout Southern California since its inception in 1944. She will also be responsible for the newspaper's communications department and will be instrumental in establishing a multi-faceted "Reading by 9" program at The Times aimed at increasing the reading skills of school children throughout the Southland.

Hill will also continue to serve as president and chief executive officer of The Times Mirror Foundation, a position she has held since joining Times Mirror, The Times' parent company, in February of 1997. In this capacity, she will continue to report to the Foundation's board of directors, which is chaired by Mark Willes, publisher of The Times and chairman and chief executive officer of Times Mirror.

"Every day, this newspaper provides an extraordinary public service through its far-reaching and top-quality journalism," said Willes. "As a corporate citizen, we also play an important role in helping our community be all that it can be," he added. "Under Bonnie's leadership, we hope to broaden that role and be an even stronger agent for change and promoter of common understanding."

LANTimes Names Bradley Shimmin Editor, James Richardson Associate Publisher

CMP Media's LANTimes has promoted Bradley F. Shimmin to editor and James C. Richardson to associate publisher/sales. The actions enhance the news-analysis publication's coverage of distributed computing and its ability to bolster brand support for technology providers.

In his position reporting to Jeremiah Caron, editor-in-chief, Brad Shimmin is responsible for directing the publication's content development and editing process. In addition, he'll play an instrumental role in guiding the publication's strategic direction. Shimmin, who was online editorial director since July 1997, is a five-year veteran of LANTimes. Earlier, as news editor, he helped evolve the publication's networks, applications and services focus as the source for distributed-computing news analysis. Before joining LANTimes, Shimmin was a senior acquisitions editor with Harcourt Brace/Academic Press and an acquisitions editor with Osborne McGraw-Hill.

"These promotions are an overall indication of the renewed resources and energy that CMP and LANTimes will be bringing to bear upon the networking market," said Publisher Patricia Schnaidt. "With these promotions, new marketing programs and sales efforts, we'll be able to continue to be a valuable partner by providing more value-added resources for our advertisers and ensure that we maintain the quality editorial our subscribers have come to expect from the publication."

Schnaidt also announced that R. Scott Raynovich was promoted to news editor from senior editor. He now will direct the news department's content development and editing process. Brian Riggs has been promoted to features editor from senior editor. Riggs has responsibility for the newsmagazine's features department content and editing. Additionally, Sarah Hancock, former production editor, has been named managing editor. She will be responsible for all aspects of editorial production, including a supervisory role over the copy editors.

Recognizing a need for more specific discussion of issues not related to the I-Sales focus on online advertising, AudetteMedia created HelpDesk. 6,500 members worldwide read the HelpDesk each weekday.

HelpDesk provides the forum for both novice and advanced questions and discussion of web-related issues. The moderator, Eva Rosenberg, leads the group in subjects ranging from operational guidelines for websites, web marketing techniques, to general online business questions.
