Ron Hubbard/Kevin J. Anderson adventure novel Ai! Pedrito! -- When Intelligence Goes Wrong, signed by Anderson during a recent marathon autographing session in Los Angeles. Based on an original story by Hubbard -- inspired by a series of actual incidents in the famed writer's life -- and novelized by X-Files author Anderson, Ai! Pedrito! (Bridge Publications) is a tale of exact-look-alike spies and intelligence agencies. In the novel, Hubbard and Anderson transform the old adage that "Somewhere in the world, everyone has an exact double" into an adventure of espionage and intrigue when strait-laced U.S. Navy Lt. Tom Smith discovers that his personal dead ringer is notorious South American revolutionary and spy Pedrito Miraflores, and they unexpectedly change places. Pocket Books to Publish the Starr Report Pocket Books will publish in a mass market paperback format ($5.99) Whitewater independent counsel Kenneth Starr's report that was sent to Congress, it was announced by Gina Centrello, Pocket Books' president and publisher. The book will be in stores beginning Tuesday, September 15. According to The New York Times, prosecutors said that the report contained "substantial and credible information that may constitute grounds for impeachment" of President Clinton. The 445-page report delivered to Congress includes a 25-page introduction, a 280-page narrative of events, and a 140-page section laying possible grounds for impeachment. Ms. Centrello said, "after careful consideration we decided that there are indeed many, many people who would like to be fully informed about the situation the President now faces. Our book is for those who want to go beyond the news and read for themselves." The Pocket Books edition will include an introduction by Phil Kuntz, a Washington D.C. based staff reporter for the Wall Street Journal who has been covering the investigation of President Clinton. Sister Newspapers in Oregon Join Forces to Publish New Joint Sunday Edition On September 13, a new Sunday paper, Mid-Valley Sunday, will be jointly published for the first time by the Corvallis Gazette-Times and the Albany Democrat-Herald newspapers after a year of planning. Current subscribers to the Democrat-Herald will receive Mid-Valley Sunday free for six weeks. Gazette-Times readers currently receive a Sunday edition Veteran newspaper journalist Jim Murez is editor of Mid-Valley Sunday. Murez was hired especially for the new Sunday issue. Hasso Hering, editor of the Albany paper since 1979, will serve as executive editor of Mid-Valley Sunday. Combined, the Corvallis and Albany newspapers have a circulation of 35,000 and employ nearly 200. Some 40,000 copies of Mid-Valley Sunday will be printed each week for subscribers and retail sales. By focusing the efforts of these employees on jointly producing an expanded Sunday newspaper, the company believes it can better serve its readers and advertisers. Deb Daniels Promoted to General Manager at In Style Magazine Deb Daniels has been promoted to general manager at In Style, it was announced by publisher Ann Jackson. Daniels had been the production director since December 1997. In this new capacity, she will continue to oversee production, and will also take on responsibility for finance and administration. Prior to In Style, Daniels had been the business manager at Sports Illustrated for Kids and held various positions in production at other Time Inc. publications, including Sports Illustrated, Life and Discover. Daniels graduated from Rutgers University with a BA in English and Columbia University with an MBA in marketing. In Style, a celebrity lifestyle magazine, was launched in June 1994 by Time Inc. It is an insider's guide to the lives and lifestyles of the world's most fascinating people, offering inspiration and ideas about beauty, fashion, decor, entertaining and charities. Chemical Week Associates Acquires Today's Refinery Magazine Chemical Week Associates, a communications and information company for the worldwide chemical business and related industries, announced its acquisition of Today's Refinery, the journal of record of the petroleum industry's refining sector from Percy Publishing Inc. Chemical Week's President/COO, Michael Silber said, "what attracted us to Today's Refinery was its focus on the refining niche of the petroleum industry. It's the only magazine in the world focused strictly on refining. Today's refining professionals look for specific information and Today's Refinery is an ideal publication for their needs."
