Monday, September 14th, 1998 Media Cynic | Forum | Advertising | Classifieds | Jobs Thomson Business Information Merges Three Companies, Forming the Gale Group Thomson Business Information announced that it is merging three of its electronic and reference publishing subsidiaries -- Gale Research, Information Access Company (IAC), and Primary Source Media -- into a new company called The Gale Group. Each of the companies is a leader in its respective segment of the public, academic, and school library, and other professional markets. "We are merging three strong companies into a new worldwide leader," said Patrick J. Tierney, TBI President. "By combining Gale's extensive new product development, editorial, and print publishing capabilities, IAC's expertise in electronic publishing, and Primary Source Media's expertise with publishing original research materials, we will create compelling new products, strengthen existing ones, and deliver the highest quality of customer service." Tierney also announced that Allen Paschal, until today President of IAC, has been appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The Gale Group, based in Detroit, Mich. Paschal announced that Dedria Bryfonski, until today the CEO of Gale Research, assumes the new position of President, Library Education Group of The Gale Group; and that David Lucas, CEO of Primary Source Media, will manage all Gale Group operations in Europe and additionally will direct the Primary Source Media operations in the U.S. and England. Mecklermedia Acquires Intranet Design Magazine and Scriptsearch.com Mecklermedia has acquired two Web development sites, Intranet Design Magazine, a leading online resource for intranet professionals and Scriptsearch, one of the most popular script archives on the Internet. These two acquisitions bring the number of Mecklermedia's Web site acquisitions to 20 since 1995. Intranet Design Magazine and Scriptsearch will be added to Mecklermedia's Internet.com network of websites. Intranet Design Magazine includes feature articles, news and information resources that help intranet managers define and implement their internal communications initiatives. Scriptsearch contains links to over 5,000 free scripts written in languages such as C++, CGI, Java, Unix and Visual Basic. "These two sites are perfect fits with the rest of Internet.com and demonstrate our commitment to building the foremost resource in the world for Internet news, e-commerce and Web development, " said Alan M. Meckler, chairman and CEO of Mecklermedia. Phillips Business Information Launches Newsletter for Business Publishers Phillips Business Information, Inc. (PBI) is extending its min brand with the launch of min's b-to-b, a weekly newsletter for business-to-business publishers. "min's b-to-b is a natural extension of min, a well established brand," said Angela M. Duff, publisher of min and min's b-to-b. "It will carry the style and voice of min while placing the focus on the business-to-business publisher." Each Monday morning, min's b-to-b will arrive by the subscriber's choice of fax or e-mail, delivering news and analysis on business-to- business publishing. It will provide an insider's view on business publishing, covering strategic concerns of major industry executives. min's b-to-b will track key industry players and report the inside story on recent mergers, acquisitions and deals. In addition, it will feature non-mainstream reporting, delivering news on up-and-comers, unique brand extension strategies and online publishing. min's b-to-b will be edited by Matthew Kinsman, formerly editor of Electronic Advertising & Marketplace Report, under the direction of Steve Cohn, editor-in-chief of min, with contributions from PBI's team of media editors and reporters. Warren St. John Joins Wired Magazine As Senior Writer Katrina Heron, Editor in Chief of Wired magazine, announced that Warren St. John, formerly of the New York Observer, has been appointed to Wired as Senior Writer. St. John, who has been writing The Observer's "Off the Record" media column since January of 1998, will also cover media at Wired, in addition to business, technology, culture, and the new economy. "Warren is an enormously talented reporter who truly dominates his beat," says Heron. "He'll be a great addition to the new Wired." St. John's columns at The Observer included coverage of Bertelsmann A.G.'s purchase of Random House, the Stephen Glass affair at The New Republic and other major stories related to media and publishing, including Tina Brown's departure from The New Yorker. From 1995 to 1996, St. John contributed to The New Yorker's "Talk of the Town" column. Mr. St. John will work out of Wired's New York offices. Kids Magazine Launches In Major Cities Curiocity magazine, an upbeat publication created for and about kids ages 8 to 12, is being launched in 10 major cities the week of September 14, reaching a circulation of more than 500,000. "Expanding into the top ten markets will generate national brand recognition of Curiocity For Kids," said Barbara Wolf, marketing manager for Curiocity For Kids. "The expansion provides opportunities for involvement by additional publishing partners, educators, national advertisers and kid participants." Each issue will include an in-depth local calendar of events and a mix of features including sports, pop culture, fiction, technology, games, recipes and crafts. Each local magazine brings kids an interactive component with its own companion website. For instance, New York-area kids can go to http://newyork.curiocity.com, or they can access the local website through Curiocity's FreeZone, a global online community for kids. Web Industry Momentum Awards Announced ChannelSeven.com, ICONOCAST, Mecklermedia's Internet.com, The Industry Standard, eMarketer.com, and @NY announced the Momentum Celebration and Awards to be held on October 27, 1998 in New York City. The Momentum Awards will honor seven companies and individuals that are leading the Internet economy. Modern Maturity Magazine Appoints Fitness Editor Modern Maturity Magazine has appointed Edward Jackowski, CEO of Exude Fitness as its first ever Fitness Advisor and Contributing Editor. Edward's first column Forever Fit debuted in the July/August issue.
