Ziff-Davis Announces Departure of Donald J. Byrnes, Group Publisher of PC Week and PC Magazine Claude Sheer, President of ZD Publishing, announced that Donald J. Byrnes, a founding member of the Ziff-Davis computer publishing group, will be leaving to take a job outside the company. A 15-year Ziff-Davis veteran, Byrnes began his career with the company as part of the original launch team behind the highly successful PC Week, which Ziff-Davis started in 1983. Since then, he has served in a variety of positions, rising from regional sales manager to Executive Vice President, Group Publisher of Ziff-Davis' two flagship publications -- PC Magazine and PC Week. A superb manager and motivator, Byrnes is widely recognized as having played a significant leadership role in developing and expanding Ziff-Davis' extraordinary current presence in the high tech marketplace. Sheer said, "Don has had a tremendous career both here at ZD and in computer publishing. He has made enormous and enduring contributions to our company. And he has deep personal roots here, so this was not an easy decision for him to make or for me to accept. Fortunately, we'll continue to work with Don in his new capacity, and we look forward to that. But his leadership, his warmth and his humor will be sorely missed. We wish him nothing but the best." Miller Freeman Launches ShoeFit Magazine The Miller Freeman, Inc. Healthcare Communications Group has announced the launch of ShoeFit magazine, a quarterly publication for shoe retailers whose inventory includes comfort shoes. ShoeFit's August premier coincided with the Western Shoe Association exhibition, an important retailer buying event held twice annually in Las Vegas. ShoeFit is a controlled publication and will be sent free of charge to approximately 16,000 qualified shoe retailers nationwide. ShoeFit's editorial mission is to educate retailers on promoting the benefits of comfort shoes to customers, as well as offer tips on in-store marketing, ensuring proper fit, and delivering news on materials technology and styles. ShoeFit focuses on issues specific to comfort shoes and helping retailers increase sales of their comfort shoe lines. Marcy Holeton, publisher of ShoeFit, explained, "Our goal is to help comfort shoe manufacturers educate the population they rely on to sell their products. We want to make sure retailers understand and present the unique benefits of comfort shoes when they offer them to customers alongside fashion-only shoes. In a consumer environment where 80% of women suffer foot ailments from wearing good-looking but ill-fitting shoes, the market is ripe for beautiful shoes that enhance comfort and health. Ultimately, we're hoping to raise the esteem level the concept of comfort carries with the shoe-buying public." ShoeFit's appearance functions in part to replace Stride magazine, which had been distributed free to consumers through shoe stores and physician's waiting rooms. The Miller Freeman, Inc. Healthcare Communications Group also publishes BioMechanics, a monthly magazine written for physicians and practitioners focusing on body dynamics and ambulation. Other Miller Freeman healthcare publications include Diagnostic Imaging magazine and its international editions, Telehealth Magazine, and several radiology-oriented newsletters and other information products, as well as a conference. Car and Driver Television to Premiere in January on TNN Car and Driver magazine will be taking its road show to TNN, starting Jan. 2, 1999. David Pecker, president and CEO of Hachette Filipacchi Magazines, Car and Driver's publisher, announced that production of a full season of magazine-format, half-hour Car and Driver Television shows based closely on content found in the car enthusiast magazine will begin later this year. Csaba Csere, Car and Driver's editor-in-chief, and his staff will work with RTM to bring the magazine's winning formula to television viewers. "The thrill of driving is such a visual and active experience; we're excited to be communicating even more of that experience to a television audience. Hearing an engine's rumble, watching tire-shredding acceleration, and observing a vehicle swallow passengers and luggage will let us bring our viewers along as we enjoy and evaluate the broad range of vehicles on the American road," said Csere. Car and Driver magazine, headquartered in Ann Arbor, Mich., is the largest circulation automotive magazine. Content includes everything from new car previews, road tests and features to industry news and automotive humor.
