The five-disc 1999 Grolier Multimedia Reference Suite CD-ROM Edition is expected to be street priced at $79.99. The encyclopedia's 58,000 articles (36,000 disc-based and 22,000 available through the software's two online encyclopedias) are enriched with 163 high-quality videos; 15,000 images; 1,200 maps; and 15 hours of sound that aid in the learning process. The Hammond Atlas of the World CD-ROM offers digital maps in a wide variety of styles (political, physical and TerraScape) in a database of more than 250,000 names. The famous Bartlett's Familiar Quotations takes the original book's 22,000 textual quotations and enhances them by adding rich multimedia features such as graphics, audio, movie stills and video. The Wall Street Journal Almanac CD-ROM features extensive essays and analysis, charts, graphs, reports and statistics in a multimedia format. New Request Magazine Feature Offers Music Expertise Request, a monthly music magazine, has introduced a "100 reviews" feature that will appear in each issue. Each month, beginning with the November 1998 issue, the magazine will review 100 different music albums. The reviews touch on all genres of music including rock, rap, R&B, techno, country, world, jazz, blues and classic. "The reviews reflect the diversity of music fans and our readers," said Karen Weium, publisher of Request Media, Inc. Each month, a brief synopsis of each of the 100 albums will be provided as well as a numerical rating assigned by the reviewer. "Request is committed to music, and the new feature sets the magazine aside as a music authority," said Weium. "'100 reviews' proves Request and its readers share a devout passion for music." Request is an all-music magazine covering many genres of music. It has been published monthly since July 1989, and has an ABC audited circulation of 500,000. Forman Named President and CEO of The New York Times Company Magazine Group The New York Times Company announced that Leonard P. Forman, senior vice president of corporate development, has been named president and chief executive officer of The New York Times Company Magazine Group, effective immediately, succeeding James (Jay) W. FitzGerald. The announcement was made by Russell T. Lewis, president and chief executive officer, to whom Mr. Forman will report. In his new role, Mr. Forman will be responsible for the Magazine Group's publications: Golf Digest, Golf World and Golf Shop Operations. Mr. FitzGerald, who is retiring from day-to-day oversight of the Magazine Group, will serve in an advisory role for one year as chairman. Mr. Lewis said, "Our magazines are the leaders in their field in every measure: award-winning editorial, circulation leadership and financial profitability, and we intend to expand our lead in each of these areas. We salute Jay's accomplishments over the last 31 years which helped to bring this about. We are confident that Len's operating experience and strategic discipline, combined with the strong management team in place at the Group, will allow our golf related publications to reach even higher levels of accomplishment in the future." Mr. Forman, 53, rejoined The New York Times Company as senior vice president of corporate development in April 1996. Formerly, he had been director of planning for the Company from 1974 to 1986. In 1995 he served as president and chief executive officer of a Nynex/Newsday joint venture for an electronic service that ceased when both companies altered their electronic strategies. He then became a media consultant until he joined The Times Company. Information Security Magazine Launches Security Wire Daily Information Security magazine has launched Security Wire Daily, a daily online news service devoted entirely to information security topics and issues. Like Information Security magazine, Security Wire Daily is published by ICSA Inc., the security assurance company. The news service is available free to the public at www.infosecuritymag.com/securitywire. Each weekday, Security Wire will feature several articles focusing on the news, events and people shaping the infosecurity industry. Daily editions will also feature market news and analysis, product announcements and conference updates. Hitachi Digital Heibosha to Launch 2nd Edition of CD-ROM Encyclopedia in Japan Hitachi Digital Heibonsha Ltd., Publishers, has revised the first edition of the CD-ROM World Encyclopaedia Professional version. The company is to launch its second edition on October 23, at major PC and software shops nationwide. The encyclopedia will be available in two different types of packages: the professional and basic versions. This product contains in a single CD-ROM the contents of the 35 volumes of World Encyclopaedia, published by Heibonsha Ltd., Publishers, renowned for its comprehensive and maximum volume of information. The contents include texts of more than 70 million characters written by more than 7,000 contributors, who are top specialists in their respective fields, more than 10,000 detailed monochrome figures including structural drawings and illustrations of animals and plants, approximately 1,400 colored figures (200 for the retrieval disk), approximately 6,000 pieces of mathematical and chemical expressions, a world map, a map of Japan, an encyclopedic almanac, and an encyclopedic data book.
