National Geographic To Publish French, German And Polish Editions

National Geographic Society President John Fahey announced upcoming French, German and Polish editions of National Geographic Magazine. The French, German and Polish editions of National Geographic will be produced by a partnership of Gruner + Jahr, Germany, and Grupo RBA Editores, Spain. The partners also will have the right to publish National Geographic books and to distribute National Geographic Television videos in those languages.

G + J, Europe's largest publisher of magazines, will manage the 50-50 partnership with RBA through independent companies to be set up in each of Poland, Germany and France. RBA is already publishing National Geographic magazine and the Society's books and videos in Spanish.

The G + J/RBA alliance will work closely in the German, French and Polish-speaking markets with the Society's existing partners for National Geographic books and National Geographic Television's existing partners for videos.

The new local-language editions of National Geographic magazine will be published monthly under license from the National Geographic Society and will follow closely the editorial content of the English-language original, in the same format with the familiar yellow-bordered cover.

The National Geographic Society is the world's largest nonprofit scientific and educational organization. Founded in 1888 for the increase and diffusion of geographic knowledge, the Society reflects the world through magazines, books, maps, television and interactive media. National Geographic is the official journal of the Society and is sent to nearly 10 million members each month.

Ultimate Band List Charts Top 100 Band Sites

The Ultimate Band List, a comprehensive music search engine, has announced that Korn is the most popular band on the Internet for the week ending October 11, according to the UBL Top 100. The UBL Top 100, which displays the top 100 most frequently accessed bands on the UBL, is updated weekly, providing a unique look at the music scene from the fans' perspective. Korn, Marilyn Manson and Metallica were all in the top 5, while bands that showed significant movement on the chart were Janet Jackson, who moved from 39 to 17, and All Saints, who moved from 46 to 18.

"The UBL Top 100 is a terrific barometer of a group's popularity on a grass roots level," says Steve Rennie, president of The Ultimate Band List. "It is not necessarily an indicator of who is selling the most records, but rather which artists fans are most interested in. The fact is that fans visit band web sites not merely for the purpose of buying albums. They visit sites because they want to learn more about the band, concert information or to purchase merchandise."

Created and maintained by ARTISTdirect, the Ultimate Band List categorizes and organizing more than 100,000 music-oriented Websites which are maintained by fans, record companies and other entertainment organizations. The service provides a searchable database of all websites relating to bands, record labels, online CD stores, concerts, ticket sales, tours, radio stations, contests, e-zines, chats, live broadcasts, and online events. The Ultimate Band List will soon be available in six different languages. The service regularly records more than 1.5 million unique visitors and 4.8 million page views each month.

Jim Henson Company Launches "BRATS of the Lost Nebula" Website

The Jim Henson Company Wednesday announced the launch of bratsofthelostnebula.com, a "telefusion" website to accompany BRATS of the Lost Nebula, a new action-adventure sci-fi series from Jim Henson Television and Decode Entertainment in association with Wandering Monkey Entertainment. bratsofthelostnebula.com debuted simultaneously on the Internet as BRATS of the Lost Nebula premiered on Kids' WB! on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. ET. (9 a.m. PT). The announcement was made by Craig Allen, general manager, Jim Henson Interactive.

According to Allen, bratsofthelostnebula.com provides "telefusion," the merging of two distinct entertainment forms, television and new media, to provide an enhanced and unified interactive experience. "bratsofthelostnebula.com will provide 13 weeks of Website programming tied to each specific episode," said Allen. "Instead of a traditional, static Web site, visitors will be immersed in the world of the `Brats' and will be able to participate in their universe in a way that extends the mythology of the show."

BRATS of the Lost Nebula is a new sci-fi adventure series from Jim Henson Television that combines "got-to-see-it-to-believe-it" puppetry and computer-generated imagery in a way never before done for television. The adventures begin when five kids from war-torn planets, each searching for their families, are thrown together and forced to survive by their wits in a universe under attack.

US Interactive Develops 'StrikingItRich.com'

US Interactive recently launched the promotional website for the new McGraw-Hill book StrikingItRich.com: Profiles of 23 Incredibly Successful Websites You've Probably Never Heard Of, by Jaclyn Easton. The official site, http://www.strikingitrich.com, was launched September 30 in conjunction with the publication of the book. Easton, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times and an on-camera Internet expert for CBS 2 News in Los Angeles, selected US Interactive for the project.

"I wanted a "wow" site for this book and was personally making the investment," said Easton. "US Interactive was my first choice, because I knew www.strikingitrich.com would be packed with back-end technology you normally wouldn't see on a site to promote a book. My need for elegant technology and functional design made US Interactive a logical choice."

StrikingItRich.com is a leading hardcover title from McGraw-Hill's business division. The book's forward was written by Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com.

Robert DeMarzo Named Publisher of VARBusiness Magazine

Robert C. DeMarzo was named publisher of CMP Media's VARBusiness. He had been the magazine's editor-in-chief since June 1997. DeMarzo succeeds Leslie Jeffery who recently was named publishing director for CMP Channel Group sales.

"Few people have as great an understanding of the channel as Bob does," said John Russell, vice president/group publisher of CMP's Channel Group. "His unique perspective of the relationships among vendors, distributors and resellers, gained during 15 years of covering the market, provides him with the insights needed to make VARBusiness an even more v aluable resource for channel members."

DeMarzo, who joined CMP Media in 1983 as an assistant editor of Computer Reseller News, served in numerous editorial positions at the technology newspaper on his way to becoming its editor in 1994. In that position, he worked closely with Editor-in-Chief Robert Faletra in shaping the newspaper's direction for several years before his VARBusiness assignment. For a four-year interim period starting in 1986, he held posts at CMP's Manufacturing Week, Communications Week and Macintosh News. Before joining CMP, he was a newspaper reporter.

Succeeding DeMarzo as editor is Mark Kindley who has served as the magazine's executive editor/features since 1997. Kindley joined VARBusiness in 1989 as a senior editor following a freelance career that included writing for Associated Press, Smithsonian and several trade and consumer articles.
