The ISP-Lists business is a collection of e-mail based discussion lists, e-mail newsletters, and websites all focused on specific aspects of the Internet Service Provider industry. In September 1998, ISP-Lists distributed more than 3 million e-mail discussion posts from more than 7,000+ list members. ISP-Lists founder Christopher M. Knight has joined Internet.com's staff and is charged with furthering development of the business. "ISP-Lists is the online hub of the Internet Service Provider community," said Alan M. Meckler, chairman and CEO of Mecklermedia. "Many people are talking about online 'communities' today. ISP-Lists is the best execution of the 'community' concept that we've seen in the business-to-business arena. We're impressed with what Chris Knight has built and are pleased that he'll be joining us to continue that work," Meckler added. "Selling to the ISP market is a top priority for many technology companies. The ISP-Lists properties are effective vehicles for reaching the members of the community when they are in buying mode," said Chris Elwell, vice president and general manager of Internet.com. MSN Sidewalk Teams With Content Publishers Microsoft Corp. announced it is working with publishers to build the new version of its MSN Sidewalk online guide. The expanded guide is now available nationwide and features Yellow Pages and a series of buying guides to help consumers make a broad range of daily decisions, from picking a restaurant or movie to choosing a stereo or hiring a contractor. To create the new guides, the editorial staff of MSN Sidewalk worked closely with a broad range of leading publishers, including ZDNet, Consumers Digest magazine, Consumer Guide, Times-Mirror Magazines' Ski, Skiing, Golf and Snowboarding and Zagat Survey LLC. According to MSN Sidewalk Business Unit Manager Matt Kursh, today's consumers face a myriad of complex decisions each day. "We wanted to build the ultimate resource for time-starved, information-hungry consumers to easily find the information they need to plan a night on the town or make a major purchase decision," Kursh said. "The first order of business was to identify the best content publishers in each area so we could make MSN Sidewalk a trusted resource." The service features integration of editorial created by the staff of MSN Sidewalk with information provided by expert sources such as the following: Consumer Electronics Manufacturers' Association (CEMA), CinemaSource, Consumers Digest, Consumer Guide, Dennis Barker, InfoUSA, Pollstar, StoreSearch, Times Mirror Magazines, Zagat's, ZDNet, MSN CarPoint, MSN Expedia, MSN HomeAdvisor and MSN MoneyCentral. Los Angeles Times to Launch Program to Improve Children's Reading Skills The Los Angeles Times has announced a program to help Southern California children achieve grade-level reading skills by the time they reach the age of nine. The program, called Reading by 9, was announced in the Los Angeles Times in a front-page message from Mark H. Willes, publisher of The Times and chairman and chief executive officer of Times Mirror, the newspaper's parent company, and Michael Parks, editor and executive vice president of The Times. Reading by 9 will address the growing number of children who haven't learned how to read competently by age nine. About two-thirds of third-graders in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino and Riverside counties failed to achieve grade-level reading last spring, according to the California State Department of Education. Research shows that those children are likely to be poor readers their whole lives, and, as a result, face a lifetime of hardship, humiliation and often poverty. "The evidence is very compelling that illiteracy is at the root of many of the most daunting challenges facing our society," Willes said. "The best, perhaps only, way to take on an initiative of this magnitude is by working together with partners from every field and discipline. We have both an opportunity and an obligation to leave a legacy of literacy for future generations of Southern Californians." News and feature coverage in The Times will focus public attention on early literacy--the extent of the problems and possible solutions. Willes is also inviting partners from business, education, government, media and civic organizations to join The Times in what he calls "an urgent and massive effort to improve our children's reading skills and improve their -- and our -- chances for future success." The Times has made a minimum commitment of five years to Reading by 9, which will involve virtually every division of the company and an investment of resources and cash by the company of more than $5 million. New Website Reveals Secrets of Near Death Experiences "Suddenly, an enormous explosion erupted beneath me, an explosion of light rolling out to the farthest limits of my vision. I was in the center of the Light. It blew away everything, including the fog. It reached the ends of the universe, which I could see, and doubled back on itself in endless layers. I was watching eternity unfold." This account and sixteen other near death experiences are profiled on Near Death Experiences Revealed, a new website by Kevin Williams. Williams' site pursues the answers to life's largest questions by focusing on those who have touched the world beyond death and returned to tell about it. Explains Williams: "The purpose of these web pages is to magnify the truth and to shine a light in this world of darkness. I seek to end the ignorance and fear of death. I seek more spiritual love and light in my fellow human beings. I wish everyone could find the great love and light I have found in meditating on the great truths revealed in these web pages. This is my mission in this life and my love." Around the Web 'Extra!'
