Symposium to Explore the Impact of New Technology On Scholarly Publishing The Internet and other forms of electronic publishing pose attractive alternatives, but publishing electronically raises new issues. Next month, a symposium on the UC Berkeley campus will bring together publishers, academic librarians and scholars to discuss these issues and opportunities. ``Publishing information is getting more and more expensive,'' says Jeanne Fong, of the Librarians Association of UC Berkeley and chair of the conference planning committee. ``Because of the new economic realities facing universities, people involved in academic publishing need to create new paradigms for scholarly publishing and communication.'' ``Alternative Models for Scholarly Publishing'' will take place on Friday, November 6, from 8:30 am to 3 pm, at the Krutch Theater, Clark Kerr Campus, 601 Warring Street, Berkeley. The fee for the program is $65 in advance, $75 at the door and $25 for UC faculty, staff and students with identification. University of California President Richard C. Atkinson will deliver the opening address. Speakers will discuss issues of ownership and control of documents posted on the Internet, as well as the nature of Internet publishing venues.
