The localized searches are mini-directories that enable users to tab back and forth between local and global content on the site. "The addition of local directories adds depth, personalization and user convenience to the site," said Evan Thornley, co-founder and CEO of LookSmart. "Now our users have access to three levels of search results: sites from the city of their choice, sites from all of LookSmart and sites from AltaVista Results -- comprehensive searches at the click of just one button. From an advertising perspective, these local directories will allow advertisers to target their audience much more specifically than before." LookSmart editors partnered with Cox Interactive Media (CIMedia) editors from local CIMedia city sites who are familiar with the 65 markets. The LookSmart local directories will also be incorporated into CIMedia's local city guides. New Issue Of Servlet Central Online The new issue of Servlet Central is Online. Servlet Central is an online publication dedicated to providing highly focused information on server-side Java. Each issue contains articles and columns written by people using servlets, Enterprise JavaBeans, object request brokers, and other server-side Java technologies to build next generation applications, Intranets, and web sites. The theme for the current issue is "JSP, Security, and Sessioning." In addition to the articles related to the issue's theme, there is a range of other informative articles and regular columns devoted to servlet development. Servlets are Java components that extend the functionality of a traditional web server. Servlets provide advantages over traditional CGI applications on the server; they allow developers to build robust, secure, and scalable server-based solutions much more quickly than possible in the past. All major web server platforms now support servlets either natively or through third party add-ons. Servlet Central is published by Servlet Central Publishing, a division of Electronaut Software Corporation. Electronaut provides next generation hosting services, such as servlet support, for technology focused firms. Greenpeace Launches New Website Greenpeace announced today the launch of its redeveloped website. The site has been completely redesigned and features numerous new sections and capabilities. "We wanted a completely new look for the site," said Adlai Amor, Greenpeace Director of Communications. "This site updates the image of Greenpeace on the Internet, expands the scope and accessibility of our information and provides opportunities for individuals to actively participate in our work." There are several new sections of the site including "Save The Planet" which houses the Greenpeace action center. The action center gives individuals the opportunity to make their voices heard on the most pressing environmental issues by sending online faxes and e-mails to government and industry. "Inside Greenpeace" provides staff profiles, job listings, organizational history and a "time machine" which can be used to view historical moments from Greenpeace over the past 28 years. The "Media Center" features the latest news, online media kits and a publications archive. In its multimedia section visitors can watch Greenpeace videos online. The "Green Room" includes the "Kids' Clubhouse," a quiz, a weekly online poll and online postcards. "It was important to us that people who come to our site are able to do more than just read about our work," explained David Barre, Coordinator of Creative Services for Greenpeace. "With that in mind, we developed activist tools like the action center and other interactive elements such as the online postcards and question of the week."
