Shirk, who was most recently news director for SF Gate, the online editorial service of Chronicle Publishing Company, brings 28 years of news management and print and online journalism experience to Wired News. The company also announced further expansion of its business and political coverage with the appointment of two top-level journalists -- Declan McCullagh, formerly of Time Inc., and Kourosh Karimkhany, formerly of Reuters and Bloomberg News -- to the posts of politics editor and business editor, respectively. These appointments will enhance Wired News's analysis of technology's deepening influence on worldwide capital markets, economics, and politics. "Wired News's incredible growth is a result of the strong team of journalists and writers who deliver the future daily to an increasingly strong and loyal readership base," said Beth Vanderslice, president of Wired Digital. "With the addition of George Shirk and top journalists like Declan and Kourosh, we're well positioned to continue providing the best beyond-the- horizon technology coverage in the online news industry." Prior to joining Wired News, George Shirk spent three years developing Chronicle Publishing's SF Gate into a digital address for general news, entertainment, and information about the San Francisco Bay Area. Prior to that, Shirk was a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Jose Mercury News, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Des Moines Register and Tribune, and The Cedar Rapids Gazette. In addition to his work in the field, Shirk currently teaches Internet journalism at the City College of San Francisco and sits on the advisory board of the University of Iowa's School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Faulkner & Gray to Launch Two New Publications Faulkner & Gray, Inc., a publisher of specialized information technology magazines, has announced a bimonthly magazine covering the increasingly critical role of personal identification and biometrics in a networked society. ID World will address both traditional and emerging identification technologies including biometrics, smart cards, electronic photo ID, public key cryptography, anti-counterfeit techniques, and RFID. Also announced was Internet Retailer, a magazine for traditional retailers, catalog merchants, and a brand new class of "virtual" storekeepers. Internet Retailer will also report on efforts by manufacturers of brand-name merchandise to bypass retailers and sell goods directly to consumers on the Web. "As we evolve into a more networked society, it is clear that more attention will need to be paid to identification in both the physical and virtual worlds," according to ID World Publisher Ben Miller. Miller, who founded the CardTech/SecurTech conference business, joined F&G at the beginning of this year, when F&G purchased CTST, the world's largest conference for advanced card, security, and identification technology. "F&G is uniquely positioned to publish ID World because of the insight and relationships that we have established through our existing publishing and conference business," observes F&G President Jack Love. "Card Technology, one of our fastest growing magazines, already serves the smart card side of CTST's market. ID World gives us a publication that serves the biometric and other advanced identification systems market, which is the other key element of CTST's success." The Petersen Companies, Inc. to Increase its Portfolio The Petersen Companies, Inc. announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire six magazines from The Curtco Freedom Group. They are Home Theater, Home Theater Buyer's Guide, Home Theater Interiors, Digital Home Entertainment, Mobile Computing and and Portable Computing Magazines. In addition to the six titles, the acquisition includes the Home Theater Magazine Entertainment Expo and Sale and various websites related to the publications. On making the announcement, Petersen's Chairman, President and CEO James D. Dunning, Jr. said, "We are excited to add these quality publications to our portfolio which is the largest special interest magazine portfolio in the U.S. Over the last eight months, Petersen has acquired 45 special interest magazines, and as part of our continuing strategy to build our special interest magazine and multimedia portfolio, we will continue to add titles, including trade publications and trade shows." Dunning added, "We believe this acquisition will be accretive to earnings for the company's fiscal year 1999." Home Theater magazine, a monthly publication, is the leading magazine in the audio/video marketplace. It is exclusively dedicated to the home theater market, covering the latest in audio, video, surround sound, movies and music. Home Theater has an audited circulation of over 100,000. Mobile Computing, which targets the corporate volume buyers of mobile technology, and Portable Computing, which targets mostly power users and influencers using leading edge mobile products, are both monthly publications. InvestorMap.com Launches InvestorMap.com, is a new directory of investing and trading resources on the Internet. USA Today said, "This is truly a huge list, and nicely organized." To maximize the directory's usefulness, the 3,000+ listings are organized into more than 100 categories and include descriptions. There are thousands of investing and trading resources on the Internet. InvestorMap.com brings some order to the chaos. "The mainstream directories such as Yahoo just can't offer comprehensive coverage of financial sites, and the search engines are not selective enough" says Jeff Walker, publisher of InvestorMap.com. "That is our niche. InvestorMap.com offers comprehensive coverage of the financial sites and resources on the Internet. If we don't list a site, we encourage our visitors to tell us about it." In addition to the web based directory, visitors can sign up for a free e-mail newsletter that will provide ongoing coverage of the online investing and trading world. The newsletter will feature new sites, site reviews, coverage of online investing news, and tips on how to effectively use the Internet for investing and trading. InvestorMap.com also features a "Daily Markets" page that has direct links to free sources of quotes, charts, breaking news and commentary, and earnings news.
