Stephen Hamblett Retires as Publisher and CEO of The Providence Journal Company

Belo has announced that Stephen Hamblett, a member of Belo's Board of Directors and chairman, publisher and chief executive officer of The Providence Journal Company, will retire effective April 1, 1999 as publisher and chief executive officer. Hamblett, age 64, will remain a director of Belo and chairman of the board of The Providence Journal Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Belo.

Succeeding Hamblett as publisher and chief executive officer of The Providence Journal Company is Howard G. Sutton, a 26-year veteran of PJC who is currently president and assistant publisher. No other management changes are planned coincident with Hamblett's retirement.

In commenting on his retirement, Hamblett said, "After much deliberation, I have decided to retire as publisher and CEO of The Providence Journal Company. I am very pleased that Howard Sutton will succeed me in these positions, retaining his present title of president as well.

Effective with Hamblett's retirement, Sutton will become a member of The Providence Journal Company board of directors. Burl Osborne, president of Belo's Publishing Division and publisher of The Dallas Morning News, will also join The Providence Journal Company board and succeed Hamblett as board chairman upon his retirement in December 2000.


American Lawyer Media Launches California Law Week

American Lawyer Media, Inc. (ALM) has announced the launch of California Law Week. Premiering February 8, California Law Week will combine weekly print coverage and commentary on statewide legal issues, with a daily legal e-mail news service for subscribers. The newspaper will offer readers enhanced coverage of topics ranging from Hollywood deal-making to legal trends in Silicon Valley. California Law Week will also provide features and original content for ALM's Cal Law site, and will complement The Recorder, ALM's daily legal newspaper based in San Francisco.

"California Law Week offers lawyers, legislators and executives across the state three-tier print, electronic and Web access to vital legal news and analysis," said William Pollak, President and Chief Executive Officer of ALM. "In addition, it will create new opportunities for ALM to leverage its coverage of this important region in a variety of products, from our national publications to our online initiatives through the Law News Network and AmLawJOBS.com."

The first issue of California Law Week will debut next Monday, February 8, 1999. The publication will be tabloid-sized and printed on a distinctive peach-colored stock. Approximately 85% of the paper's distribution is expected to be in Southern California.


American Media Inc. Announces Cease of Publication of Soap Opera News and Soap Opera Magazine

American Media Inc. has announced that it has ceased publication of Soap Opera News and Soap Opera Magazine and has sold certain of the trademarks and publishing assets relating to the magazines to Primedia Inc.

American Media Inc. publishes National Enquirer, Star, Weekly World News and Country Weekly. Distribution Services Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary, provides marketing, merchandising and information gathering services to publishing and consumer products companies and to retailers.


Paramount Signs John Markus To Develop Comedy Series

Emmy Award-winning writer/producer John Markus has been signed to create, develop and produce a comedy series for the Network Television Division of the Paramount Television Group, it was announced by Tom Mazza, executive vice president of creative affairs for the Division.

In making the announcement, Mazza commented, "John is one of the best writers and show runners in the business and we are thrilled he has chosen Paramount as his production partner. We have a wonderful partnership with John on Lateline and look forward to many years of success."

Markus co-created and serves as an executive producer on Paramount's comedy series Lateline for NBC. Lateline, a satire of broadcast news and politics, originally debuted on March 17, 1998 and will return to NBC's Tuesday schedule on March 16, 1999.

Most recently, Markus served as a consulting producer on the acclaimed HBO series The Larry Sanders Show, where he received an Emmy Award nomination for co-writing the "Ellen: Is She or Isn't She" episode. Prior, Markus was the co-executive producer of the hit CBS comedy series The Cosby Show. Part of the original writing staff, Markus was named supervising producer after six episodes and was promoted to co-executive producer in the second season. During his tenure, he wrote or co-wrote 67 episodes, earning an Emmy Award and two Humanitas prizes. Additionally, Markus co-created A Different World (1987-93) while at The Cosby Show. Markus began his career in Paramount's apprentice writing program and his first writing assignment was for Paramount's Taxi.
