The New York Times and Scholastic Inc. to Co-Publish The New York Times Upfront

The New York Times Company and Scholastic Inc. have announced that they have reached an agreement to publish The New York Times Upfront, a news magazine designed specifically for teenagers. The joint announcement was made by Dick Robinson, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Scholastic Inc., and Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., chairman of The New York Times Company and publisher of the newspaper.

The New York Times Upfront will feature articles on current news events and politics, including stories of particular interest to teens, culled primarily from the pages of The New York Times. The publication will include pieces written exclusively for The New York Times Upfront by Times reporters from around the world, as well as articles and features from The Times revised specifically for the magazine's audience. A senior editorial team, drawn from both Scholastic and The Times, will oversee the editing process, and will rely on Scholastic's expertise in producing engaging materials for students.

"All of us at The New York Times are delighted with this partnership with Scholastic, a well respected organization in the educational arena. We are pleased to be able to extend The New York Times brand to the next generation of readers through the creation of The New York Times Upfront," said Mr. Sulzberger. "The New York Times Upfront is a natural extension of our educational initiatives, including our Newspaper in Education program and our recently launched New York Times Learning Network."

"Scholastic has developed the unique ability to understand what young people of all ages want, and knows how to create kid-friendly materials that parents and teachers trust," said Mr. Robinson. "We have been committed to providing publications and services that connect school, home and the world, fostering learning and technology literacy for all students. We are pleased to be working with the prestigious New York Times to create this exciting, engaging vehicle which will inspire critical thinking about issues that students want to know more about and to be serving the often overlooked teen market. The New York Times Upfront is a bold, meaningful publication with value for students not only in the classroom, but also at home and online."

The premier issue of The New York Times Upfront will be published in April 1999, and beginning in September, the magazine will be published every two weeks, with online updates, throughout the school year (18 issues, September to May). The annual subscription rate is $19.95 with a lower rate for multi-copy classroom subscriptions.

The target circulation for The New York Times Upfront is 300,000 next year with an estimated readership of one million. The New York Times Upfront will offer advertisers a unique and highly desirable teen audience. The magazine will replace Scholastic Update magazine, itself a re-launch of Senior Scholastic, the company's first magazine started in 1920 to bring current events into the classroom.

VSI Holdings Inc. To Produce Edutainment Exhibition Based on Grossology-themed Books

VSI Holdings, Inc. has announced it has reached a licensing agreement with Penguin Putnam Inc. for the rights to design worldwide touring and permanent exhibitions based on the series of best-selling Grossology-themed books authored by science teacher Sylvia Branzei. The company expects that Grossology will expand worldwide as it appeals to a variety of venues including science centers, children's museums, theme parks, mall and zoos.

The initial 5,000-square-foot interactive exhibition, titled Grossology: (The Impolite) Science of the Human Body, will premiere at Science World British Columbia in Jan. 2000 and embark on a five-year tour of North American science centers. In addition to hosting the first event, Science World will collaborate with VSIH's entertainment subsidiary Advanced Animations and its touring group Advanced Exhibits on the design, educational content and scientific accuracy of the exhibition. The tour is expected to reach an estimated 4.5 million people.

The exhibition will allow the visitor to enter a 3-D interactive world patterned after the images shown in the book, utilizing sophisticated animatronics and imaginative 3-D hands-on interactives to actively engage visitors in games, challenges, role-playing, self-analysis and other activities.

"We're thrilled at the enthusiasm and interest we're receiving from leading museums and science centers around the country even before the property is produced," said Terry Sparks, chief operating officer of Advanced Animations. "While the concept is humorous, there truly is educational value in understanding how and why the body performs certain functions. We utilize 'edutainment' (educational entertainment) to communicate important biological processes to children. Revenue from the project will be generated from a share of ticket sales, merchandise and national sponsorships."

The AnimeOnline Network Adds New Domains

The AnimeOnline Network, currently serving the anime (also known as Japanese Animation) fan community via five domains of anime related information and services, announced plans to add five additional domains of original creations. Two of these new domains will be a network highlighting the talented voice actors in the U.S. animation industry (animeva.org) and a specially designed web database which will work to categorize the hundreds of thousands of anime and related websites online (animenexus.com).

The AnimeOnline Network, created 2 years ago, started out as a simple concept: to provide a central location for anime fans to come and find varying kinds of information and resource pertaining to their favorite topics: anime and manga (Japanese comics). The AnimeOnline Network has been written about and mentioned in several magazines, including Japan's B-Magazine, and it pulls in over 9000 visitors per day from all over the world.

"We create," says Elaine Barlow, The AnimeOnline Network's creator. "It's that simple. If a resource doesn't exist we find some way to create it. I have always felt that fans should be celebrated for their fandom expression."

Website Provides Alternative Medicine and Health Information

A unique new health information web site, HolisticOnLine, provides information on both conventional and alternative medicine. HolisticOnLine, was established by Jacob Mathew, Ph. D, president of ICBS, Inc., and Shila Mathew, MD, a staff psychiatrist at Kaiser Permanente in Cleveland, Ohio.

HolisticOnLine got its start from Dr. Shila Mathew's concerns about some of her patients, who, notes Dr. Mathew, "...started to ask me questions about St. John's wort, kava, chickweed and other herbal remedies. To my horror, I discovered that taking some of these herbs with certain prescription drugs could be very dangerous. For instance, St. John's Wort should not be combined with some prescription anti-depressants. Most doctors simply don't have the time or the knowledge to explain all the ramifications of alternative treatments, but patients need this information."
