Ms. Magazine is Back on Newsstands

Editors Marcia Ann Gillespie and Gloria Steinem unveil the first edition of Ms. magazine under the newly established all women-owned Liberty Media for Women, LLC. "Ms. has been liberated by a new breed of women activists and investors who put their money and time where their hearts are," says Gloria Steinem. "Nothing changes the gender equation more significantly than women's economic freedom."

A founding editor of Ms., Steinem is currently a consulting editor and Chairperson of Liberty Media for Women. The newly formed media consortium of feminists ranges from teenagers to septuagenarians -- Liberty Media for Women member shareholders include Sandy Lerner, co-founder of Cisco Systems, philanthropist and activist Abby Disney and sister philanthropists Anne and Allison Kiehl Friedman.

"At 15 years old, I am in the unique situation of being able to actively support a publication that presents women as positive role models because they are strong and capable," says high school student Anne Kiehl Friedman, "not because they have flat stomachs and perfect teeth. Ms. is one of the few magazines that inspires girls to do more than lose weight." Her sister, Stanford University undergraduate Allison Kiehl Friedman adds, "I invested in Ms. because I am taking a class entitled The American Dream on racial, gender and class equality. Many of the readings end with 'first published in Ms. magazine.'"

On newsstands today, the April/May issue covers an exciting range of important issues including adultery (heterosexual and lesbian), facts on face-lifts, female presidential candidates and women priests. "As the only general interest magazine for women, we have no competition," says Marcia Ann Gillespie, Editor-in-Chief of Ms. and the President of Liberty Media for Women. "Ms. is the women's magazine that raises a ruckus about the economic, political and social equality of women and will never talk about how the right makeup will change your life. Our goal is to stir the pot, question the recipe, turn up the heat."

Wireless Industry Publishers Unite for Expanded Content

CommNOW.com announced that it has forged a partnership with Wireless Review that will enable each publisher to share its unique information strengths. The new venture is in response to CommNOW.com's subscriber requests to add more features to the publisher's WirelessNOW daily online news service. WirelessNOW -- CommNow.com's flagship product -- will provide 10 headline news bytes each day to WirelessReview.com, Wireless Review's newly launched website.

"There are great synergies between CommNOW.com's WirelessNOW daily news service and Wireless Review magazine," said Andrea Knotts Bona, vice president and publisher, CommNOW.com. "Both products are respected leaders in their publishing mediums and strive to inform and educate their audiences. Our arrangement is a win-win situation for both publications."

Wireless Review will provide WirelessNOW with monthly columns covering such topics in the cellular and PCS marketplace as handsets, prepaid services and smart phones. CommNOW.com will enhance and expand its product offering to meet its subscribers' needs with monthly content from Wireless Review's editorial staff.

"This partnership represents another way we're using the Web to empower industry leaders," Wireless Review Publisher Darren Sextro said. "Visitors already turn to our site for perspective on the issues, for two-way communication with other wireless leaders, and for guidance in making business decisions. Now they can also go there for breaking news."

William Morrow Announces Publishing Partnership With Utne Reader

William Morrow and Utne Reader have entered a partnership to publish books under a new imprint: Utne Reader Books. The first two books will be released in February 2000, and will be promoted through the Utne Reader's website, Cafe Utne, the nation's most active online discussion community, according to the Forum One Report.

Visionaries Who Could Change Your Life will introduce readers to the socially engaged teachers and thinkers who are offering the curriculum for the emerging culture. Areas covered will include: the environment, feminism, creativity, science and technology, family and relationships, work, money and philanthropy.

Salons: The Joy of Conversation will offer readers a guide to the contemporary salon movement and cover the history of salons, reading groups and study circles. Utne Reader, which ran a cover story on the subject in 1991, is widely recognized as the founder of the salon movement in the U.S.

"William Morrow is the perfect partner for Utne Reader Books," said Eric Utne, who founded the Utne Reader, the nation's leading digest of alternative ideas. "Both companies have dynamic new leadership and extremely energetic, talented and creative people throughout their organizations. Working with Michael Murphy, Marly Rusoff, and the entire Morrow team will produce top quality books that we hope will make a real difference in people's lives."

Utne will oversee the project along with Robert Welsch, formerly of One Spirit Book Club and Tarcher Books, who last year was named president of the Utne Reader parent company Lens Publishing. Fourteen-year Utne Reader veteran Jay Walljasper will be the imprint's editor.

"The proposed books will alert readers to promising and useful ideas on a panoply of subjects," said Walljasper. "It's a perfect extension of the magazine's mission."

William Morrow publisher Michael Murphy is equally enthusiastic about the project. "I have been a reader, then subscriber, and constant fan of Utne Reader for the past ten years," Murphy said. "I am delighted to be partnering with Eric, Robert, Jay, and the people at Utne to bring their sensibility to a larger book readership. I also look forward to having some of their ideas shape future Morrow lists."

IDG.net Launches Global Network Dedicated To Year 2000

IDG.net has announced the launch of a global website network dedicated to tracking computing issues and commentary related to the turn of the century. Year 2000 World, a new network of sites in six languages, will offer resources and content to users in every region of the world.

The six sites of Year 2000 World will be published continuously through February, 2000, in English, French, German, Spanish, Danish and Swedish. More languages will be added throughout the year. Special services -- such as discussion forums produced in partnership with RemarQ, and daily news from CNN Interactive -- will supplement the news, features and commentary drawn from the IDG Online Network.

"With 240 leading online publications in 55 countries, IDG.net is the only network that can offer a new technology publishing model that's both global and comprehensive," said Laurie Morgan, president IDG.net. "Our locally-produced content, from trusted brands like PC World, Computerworld, InfoWorld and Network World combine with Web-based services to yield a unique, global resource."

"IDG.net's current index of Year 2000 material includes more than 1,200 articles in English alone," continued Morgan. "With hundreds of articles in five other languages, Year 2000 World is easily the richest source of Year 2000 computing editorial on the Internet."

Indieaudio.com Launches Live Today

Global Media has announced the launch of its online radio station at indieaudio.com and associated independent artist magazine culture and community at indielife.com.

Indielife.com delivers Global Media's online community. The site will provide continually updated multi-media content, chat services and a series of interactive features. Global Media's Vice-President Winston V. Barta said: "Management believes the online independent community represents a large, under-serviced community. Multiple revenue streams from CD, digital audio file, merchandise and advertising are planned." Global Media's President, Michael Metcalfe, added: "Many of the most successful sites on the Internet, including Geocities, provide an online community and services to a large market. With Indieaudio.com and Indielife.com, Global Media will be providing a community, culture and content center for an enormous market."

Aaron Stone, VP Development at Global Media said: "Our goal with Indielife.com was to provide a portal for a highly under-serviced market, the gen-X'ers. We've given them a starting point where we've gathered the entertainment content they're looking for. We've also given the indie community a voice on the Internet and a site which will be built around their contributions. Indieaudio is truly a site designed and built by members of its target market for the purpose of delivering what the market really wants."
