Hearst Magazines and Harpo Entertainment Group Announce Magazine Venture

Hearst Magazines and Harpo Entertainment Group, headed by Oprah Winfrey, have announced the introduction of a new magazine. The magazine will debut in March/April 2000 with 850,000 copies.

Winfrey's extraordinary ability to connect with women and relate to their own lives is at the heart of the new magazine. Each month, its mission will be to translate Winfrey's message to the magazine page. The magazine will include coverage on advice, spirituality, community, family, relationships, friends, work, health and fitness, fashion and beauty, and books. Hearst will be responsible for both editorial and publishing oversight of the magazine, as well as distribution.

"I love the printed word and have always appreciated the unique connection between author and reader," said Oprah Winfrey. "This magazine provides a different way for people to be informed and inspired."

Good Housekeeping Editor-in-Chief Ellen Levine, who is working closely with Black and Winfrey on the magazine's concept and design, commented: "There is a reason Oprah has been so p opular around the world for over 13 years: She inspires women and they embrace the message she sends of internal well being. A magazine which delivers that message every month in a tangible format will reinforce it and give viewers more of what they have come to expect from Oprah."

The magazine will have a cooperative relationship with the Oprah.com website, which joins Oxygen Media's network of online sites on August 1, 1999. The website will be used for cross-promotion of subscriptions to the magazine; the magazine will also promote the website. Oprah's website generated approximately 6 million page views in May.

eBay Hits Newsstands and Bookstores

eBay is introducing its new publication, eBay Magazine, and two books. eBay Magazine, a new lifestyle publication, debuts in August and is being published by Krause Publications.

"Over the past four years, a unique culture and community has formed on eBay. Millions of consumers worldwide come together daily on eBay to trade items of interest, make a living, and meet other collectors," said Brian Swette, senior vice president of marketing at eBay. "eBay has become a part of people's lives. We're excited to now offer people new ways to experience eBay in the offline world."

eBay Magazine, geared towards collecting consumers, will feature the latest trends in collecting, pop culture and the Internet. It will contain the news in collectibles, e-commerce, person-to-person trading, online entertainment and new technologies. The magazine will provide tips on how to buy, sell, invest and collect online. eBay Magazine will also report on the collecting habits of celebrities.

Krause Publications is the world's largest hobby publisher. Coin collector Chet Krause founded Krause Publications in 1952 when he launched a trader publication titled Numismatic News. Today, Krause publishes 37 periodicals in 12 collectible and hobby fields and offers more than 500 books covering the same topics.

EMAP plc Acquires Wagadon Titles

EMAP plc, EMAP Petersen's parent company, announced on July 1, 1999 that it has acquired Wagadon Limited, the specialist publisher of men's and fashion magazines including Arena, Arena Homme Plus, The Face and Frank.

The Wagadon titles complement the magazines published by EMAP Metro, in particular the men's titles FHM and FHM ollections, and are expected to benefit from becoming part of a larger publishing group.

Launched in 1980, The Face has a current monthly circulation of 71,000 and is a style and entertainment magazine read both by men and women in the 16-24 age bracket. Arena was launched in 1986 and has a circulation per issue of some 61,000 and, published 10 times a year, is read by men between the ages of 24-30. And Arena Homme Plus, launched more recently in 1994, is a twice-yearly fashion magazine.

Commenting on the acquisition, EMAP's Chief Executive Kevin Hand said, "The acquisition of the Wagadon titles strengthens our position in the men's and fashion publishing markets and complements our current magazines. It is also an excellent acquisition for several other reasons: the titles are internationally recognized magazines; we will offer a wider package of men's and fashion titles to advertisers; we will introduce electronic publishing to titles which are well-established brands; and the return on our investments should be rapid."
