Friday, July 23, 1999 Media Cynic | Forum | Advertising | Classifieds | Jobs Sun Media Corporation to Acquire The Beacon Herald Sun Media Corporation has announced it has reached an agreement to acquire The Beacon Herald in Stratford, the last remaining independent daily newspaper in Ontario. The Beacon Herald, with a daily circulation of approximately 12,500, will become the l6th Canadian daily under the Sun Media umbrella and will be managed through Bowes Publishers Limited, its community newspaper division. The Dingman family has been in the newspaper business in Stratford for 113 years. ``It was a difficult decision to sell the newspaper, but we are pleased to be joining the Bowes group'', said Charles W. Dingman, Publisher and Editor of The Beacon Herald. The city of Stratford is situated in the heart of Sun Media's heaviest regional concentration of newspapers in southwestern Ontario. With a population of 28,987, the city is renowned for its annual Stratford Festival. ``This is a key strategic location for Sun Media/Bowes and enhances the Corporation's presence in that area. We are absolutely thrilled to have The Beacon Herald join the Sun Media family. We look forward to continuing the tradition that the Dingman family has built in the city of Stratford,'' said Paul Godfrey, President and CEO of Sun Media Corporation. Imagine Media Announces Launch of NGamer Magazine Imagine Media has announced the launch of NGamer. NGamer will be an unofficial Nintendo authority, covering all aspects of Nintendo gaming, including the Nintendo 64, Color Game Boy and the next generation Dolphin system. "NGamer will offer the highest editorial quality and will fill the needs of more mature Nintendo gamers frustrated with their current games magazine choices. The rebellious attitude, intelligent insight, and distinctive style of Imagine's other console magazines will continue in NGamer. Advertisers have already given us a resoundingly positive response to its launch," stated Doug Faust, Publisher of NGamer. Vince Matthews, a games industry veteran, will head up the launch of NGamer as Editor-in-Chief. Matthews was with Imagine in its early days and helped launch Next Generation in 1994. He has authored numerous books for Prima Publishing including an N64 buyers guide, two PlayStation compilation books and the Unofficial Quake 64 Guide. Most recently Matthews worked as the Senior Product Manager for Interactive Magic where he handled packaging and marketing for Knights and Merchants, Robo Rumble, Spearhead, Wall Street Tycoon, Shadow Company and Mortyr. The NGamer launch follows that of the Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine, which premieres next month. NGamer will be published bi-monthly and will hit the newsstands on November 9, 1999.
