Monday, August 23rd, 1999 Carole Baron Joins Penguin Putnam as President of Dutton Phyllis Grann, President of Penguin Putnam Inc., has announced that Carole Baron has joined the company as President of Dutton. Mrs. Baron, who will report directly to Mrs. Grann, joins Penguin Putnam after serving for twelve years as President and Publisher of Dell/Delacorte, a division of Random House. Her publishing list of best-selling authors includes Danielle Steel, Thomas Harris, John Grisham, Judy Blume, Nicholas Evans, Elmore Leonard, Sara Paretsky, Maeve Binchy and Belva Plain. In conjunction with this move Susan Petersen Kennedy, who also reports to Mrs. Grann and had been President of Viking Penguin, has been promoted to Chairman of Viking Penguin, Plume and Studio Books. She will also remain publisher of Riverhead Books, an imprint she founded in 1994, and Executive Vice President of Penguin Putnam, Inc. Additionally, Clare Ferraro, formerly President of Dutton, Plume has been appointed President of Viking Penguin, Plume and Studio Books, reporting to Susan Petersen Kennedy. Mrs. Baron, Mrs. Kennedy and Ms. Ferraro will begin their new positions on September 13, 1999. Additionally she edited and published Nicholas Evans, author of The Horse Whisperer and The Loop, both national bestsellers in hardcover and paperback. Mrs. Baron also edited and published Judy Blume's best-selling adult novel Summer Sisters. Rivals.com to Launch Team Sports and Specialty Channel Network Rivals.com, Inc. has announced the launch of its sports network with more than 350 team sports and specialty channel websites. Rivals.com has also announced that the company and News America Digital Publishing, producer of FOX Sports Online, have signed a letter of intent for a broad strategic alliance with Rivals.com, including an equity investment in the company. Ungaro Named CEO of CurtCo Freedom Group Colin Ungaro has been named CEO of CurtCo Freedom Group, announced Sam Wolgemuth, president of Freedom Communication's magazine division. Previously, Ungaro was president and CEO of International Data Group's Network World, Inc., a computer networking magazine. "We are delighted to welcome Colin Ungaro to Freedom Magazines," said Wolgemuth. "He is an experienced business leader who has led large organizations to great success in highly competitive special interest media. He joins a high-growth business and a fine leadership team. Working together, they will be a powerful force in the computer publishing market. An industry veteran, Ungaro has also worked at CMP Publications Group as editorial director for CommunicationsWeek, CommunicationsWeek International, Network Computing and InformationWeek. Ironminds.com Announces Partnerships, Advisory Board Ironminds.com, a new daily online content network that will launch August 30, has announced three major partnerships and the formation of its advisory board. The ASCAP Foundation/Lilith Fair Songwriting Contest Announced In a joint announcement at the Lilith Fair concert at the New World Music Theater in Chicago, Illinois, Marilyn Bergman, President of The ASCAP Foundation, and Sarah McLachlan, artistic director of Lilith Fair, made public The ASCAP Foundation/Lilith Fair Songwriting Contest. An annual national competition co-sponsored by their respective organizations, The ASCAP Foundation/Lilith Fair Songwriting Contest is designed to encourage women songwriters. The contest prizes -- $25,000 for the grand prize winner and $10,000 for the first runner-up - are being funded by a group of the country's most prominent women songwriters. Commenting on the contest, Bergman said, "The ASCAP Foundation is committed to providing career development opportunities for talented and deserving music creators. Our friends at Lilith Fair have raised the profile of women in music to a new level.
