Screen Actors Guild Adds Gordon Parks Awards To IFFM Support Screen Actors Guild, a sponsor of the annual Independent Feature Film Market (IFFM) in New York for the past 3 years, will sponsor the Third Annual Gordon Parks Independent Film Awards, for achievement by African-American independent filmmakers, on Saturday evening, September 18 at the DGA Theater. Additional support for this event comes from the Directors Guild of America, Essence Entertainment and HBO. Richard Masur, SAG National President, will present the finalists of the Gordon Parks Film Awards which honor Gordon Parks, Sr., to a screenwriter and director from among eligible participants, each of whom will receive a $10,000 prize. Judges look for projects by African-American writers and directors that demonstrate promise, outstanding filmmaking talent, and a creative and unique vision. This year, SAG New York First Vice President Kim Sykes, who also serves as SAG's 4th National Vice President, and SAG National Board Member Anne-Marie Johnson, join a panel of jurors including director Haile Gerima, Harvard professor Dr. Orlando Patterson and actor Delroy Lindo. "We are delighted to be a part of this important program that celebrates black filmmakers and honors Hollywood's first black director of major film," said Masur. "SAG continues to take an aggressive stance in encouraging more diversity both on screen and behind the scenes in entertainment." IFFM, now in its 21st year, is presented by Independent Feature Project and is a leading forum for filmmakers to present their work to more than 2500 distributors, television and home video buyers, agents, development executives and festival programmers. Gordon Parks, best known for his second feature, Shaft (1971), has a long list of accomplishments within the arts, and first gained acclaim as a preeminent photojournalist at LIFE Magazine from 1948-68. His first film was The Learning Tree (1969) -- based on his autobiographical novel about growing up black in 1920s Kansas -- which he produced, wrote, directed and scored. This year's event will include a special screening of a new print of Shaft as well as a feature on the making of the movie. Peter Hubbard Named Editor of Sports Truck Accessory Digest Cygnus Publishing has announced that Peter Hubbard has been named the editor of Sports Truck Accessory Digest (STAD). He will assist in the relaunch of the four-year-old trade publication, which will feature a complete graphic redesign and an all-new editorial package. He will be based out of the company's Fort Atkinson, Wis., offices. "We are very fortunate to have someone of Peter's experience joining our staff," says Kip Czoch, publisher of the magazine. "His background in the automotive industry will truly prove invaluable as we move forward with our redesign." Hubbard began his career as an automotive editor and writer 15 years ago when he was named the transportation editor for the now-defunct Houston Post. For the past five years, Hubbard has operated his own company, Automotive Ink, a contract editing, custom publishing and public relations consulting firm. Automotive Ink successfully produced a bimonthly car care newspaper, Car Care News, for former Houston-based Hi-LO Auto Supply, as well as The Chief Motorist, a car care feature magazine for Dallas-based Chief Auto Parts. "Sports Truck Accessory Digest serves a truly dynamic market within the automotive industry," says Hubbard. "We will be covering the tremendous growth within this area and provide editorial features and columns that will help our subscribers stay informed, become better educated and more profitable, in a business segment which promises to become highly competitive in the next few years." Sports Truck Accessory Digest was purchased by Cygnus Publishing in 1998 from Continental Communications, headquartered in Elkhart, Ind., which also produces RV Trade Digest. STAD is a BPA-audited publication and reaches more than 14,000 dealers, distributors and suppliers in the light-truck accessory market. Call For Entries - The International Web Page Awards A call for entries went out this week officially opening the second season for The International Web Page Awards, an independent festival of web page graphic artists and designers meeting to judge and evaluate each others' creativity on the Internet. Established in 1998, the festival's first year drew entries from over 13 different countries. Seventy different judges, all graphic artists and web designers, participated in evaluating websites. Judges reviewed entries utilizing a 26 question critique based on the attributes of the website, directly over the Internet. Each site was reviewed by four different Judges. The questions consisted of 10 for graphic design, 10 for content and 6 for programming. In the 1998 competition Media Revolution beat out 450 entries to win the "Best of Festival" award for its Prince of Egypt website. Finishing second, one vote behind was independent designer Matt LoBato with his personal website. Eighteen companies won "Best of Category" awards, including USATODAY.com, which picked up two awards for the News and Print/Zines categories. Other double winners were BBDO Interactive of Dusseldorf, Germany in the categories of Finance and Product Information, for sites it created for Citibank and Volkswagon; San Francisco-based SF Interactive in the categories of Product Purchase and Reference-Information; and New York’s Agency.Com for Arts and Travel. According to the festivals Chairman, Edwin Fish, "What The International Web Page Awards set out to do was to create a very high profile and prestigious award and awards ceremony, solely for the recognition of outstanding graphic design and creativity on the Internet. The competition is open to all websites. It gives the opportunity for smaller design firms and individuals to compete against much larger and well-known advertising agencies and interactive design shops. The popularity of the website is not relevant to the competition." The International Web Page Awards has established 30 categories including advertising, arts, entertainment, corporate, finance, education, health, news, personal Web pages, religion/philosophy, science, sports and travel. The closing date for entries is November 30, 1999. Entry fees are $85.00 US per website, per category. For further information about The International Web Page Awards and to see a list of all 1998 winners as well as a selection of current entries visit their website.
