The new titles will enter five dynamic consumer markets: music, movies, digital photography, electronic gadgets and computing. They join Imagine's nine current magazines including Business 2.0, PC Gamer, Next Generation, PSM and Mac Addict. Imagine Media's founder and CEO Chris Anderson said, "We're delighted to be able to unveil this next phase of our growth. Imagine has a unique track record of successful launches into markets where there are exciting changes afoot and passionate audiences developing. In each of the new markets we're entering next year, we see that excitement and passion igniting. Technology is changing the rules of the game, and that has created compelling new information needs. Last year, Business 2.0 successfully nailed the new economy agenda and has already become an extraordinary magazine success story. Our new launches aim to take equally exciting leadership roles." Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Imagine Media's publications sell in excess of 1.8 million copies per month. Pearson Education Announces Formation of the Pearson Technology Group Technology publishing leaders Macmillan USA and Pearson Professional and Technical Reference (PTR) have joined forces to form the Pearson Technology Group (PTG). Mark Dalton, President of Pearson PTR, assumes the presidency of the newly formed group and will continue to report to Will Ethridge, Group President Pearson Higher Education and Professional Publishing. "Together these two businesses, which have deep roots in information technology, computer publishing and engineering, are formidable in their market positions and world-class workforce," emphasized Dalton. "This strategic alignment will allow PTG to share this expertise and the core competencies of Macmillan USA and Pearson PTR across the new enterprise." Macmillan USA houses such premier imprints as Macmillan Software, Que, Sams, BradyGAMES, Macmillan Reference, and Hayden. Pearson PTR is comprised of imprints Prentice Hall Professional Technical Reference, Peachpit, Addison Wesley Professional, New Riders, Cisco Press and Adobe Press. With the alignment of these two units the Pearson Technology Group will generate approximately $300 million in worldwide revenue, with over 1000 book and software titles published in the year 2000. "This is very exciting for us because it represents a marriage of two distinct but equal partners one with expertise in consumer markets and one with expertise in professional markets" says Dalton. "The growth figures in our industry are remarkable. The computer book market grew 13% last year and the IT training market is nearly a three billion-dollar industry. Kevin Marder to Become TradeHard.com's Editor-in Chief TradeHard.com, a website for stock, option and futures traders, has announced that Kevin N. Marder, Markets Editor of CBS MarketWatch and commentator on CBS Radio Network, has joined TradeHard.com as Editor-in-Chief. Marder will oversee and formulate editorial content and strategy for the entire site. In addition, beginning Monday, November 29, he will contribute Marder's Market Brief, a daily column providing personal insight into the financial markets, and periodically contribute Marder on the Markets, an analysis of market events. "Kevin is a wonderful addition to the TradeHard.com team," said Raul J. Pallares, president and CEO of TradeHard.com. "He combines excellent trading knowledge and performance with journalistic and editorial skills, a combination that makes him the ideal candidate for the position. Marder is a contributing author to the Prentice-Hall book Computerized Trading. He received an MBA with honors in Investments and Corporate Finance from the University of Southern California. College Television Network Changes Name to CTN Media Group Jason Elkin, Chairman and CEO, has announced that the College Television Network will change its name to the CTN Media Group to include the College Television Network, LINK Magazine and Market Place Media, effective immediately. CTN Media Group (UCTN) owns and operates media companies in three areas -- broadcasting, magazine, and newspaper. According to Elkin, this change reflects the evolution of the company from a single product television network, to a diversified, multi-platform media solutions company reaching important targeted audiences. "It is a truly exciting moment for us," says Elkin. "CTN Media Group is a dynamic, growing company that now is poised to be the leader in targeted media. Our properties are first-rate, our management team is first-rate and as far as we are concerned it is just the beginning." Writers Guild of America, West and Disney/ABC Announce Recipients of Writers Fellowships Eight writers have been chosen from a field of more than 2,000 candidates to participate in the 10th year of the Walt Disney Studios/ABC Writers Fellowship Program, it was announced by John Wells, President of the Writers Guild of America, west, and by Lloyd Braun, co-chairman, ABC Entertainment Television Group. The new Fellows were feted at a reception hosted by the Writers Guild in October, and again at a Disney/ABC reception on November 17, 1999. "The Writers Guild applauds Disney's commitment of financial resources and creative expertise to the Fellowship Program, and encourages other studios to replicate this model," said Wells in making the announcement. "The program has provided direct access to employment opportunities for writers from diverse backgrounds and we hope to see it expanded even further." Braun noted that "Walt Disney Studios is proud to be able to continue its support of this worthwhile project. We believe in nurturing talent in all areas and the writers that have emerged from the Fellowship Program have exceeded our highest expectations." The 1999-2000 Television and Feature Fellows are: Jonathan Dees, Ayanna Floyd, Gary Green, Heather Hach, Paul Makkos, Meghan McCarthy, Margaret Webb and Joan Weiss. The recipients submit scripts, which are read by representatives of the Television Fellowship Division, headed by Susan Leeper, Vice-President of Current Comedy Series, ABC Entertainment, and the Theatrical Fellowship Division, headed by Casey Wolfe, Creative Affairs Coordinator, Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group. The finalists are interviewed in person before the final selection takes place. The Health Network and Prevention Magazine Form Partnership Prevention magazine and The Health Network have formed a content and marketing partnership. The announcement was made by Barbara Newton, Vice President of Women's Publishing, Prevention magazine, and Marc Krigsman, The Health Network's Senior Vice President of Programming and Production. "Widely know for delivering trusted, well-researched health information for almost 50 years, Prevention magazine offers us an excellent opportunity to provide our consumers, on television and on the Internet, with easy-to- understand information about their health," said Krigsman. "We are thrilled about our new venture with Prevention magazine." "We look forward to working with The Health Network," said Newton. "At Prevention magazine, our mission is to help people enjoy healthier lives. We are excited that The Health Network will help to spread that message to a larger audience through television. The editorial and marketing partnership includes a Prevention magazine television program, developed and produced by The Health Network, scheduled to air in early 2000. The program will feature reports from the pages of the magazine. Prevention magazine will provide research for the 30-minute program and the network. In addition, Prevention magazine expert editors will serve as on-air guests and provide daily health tips to The Health Network viewers. The partnership also includes cross-media integrated marketing programs and Web site links. William Norwich Joins The New York Times Magazine William Norwich has joined The New York Times Magazine in the newly created position of Entertaining editor. He will report directly to Amy M. Spindler, Style editor of the Magazine. In his position, Norwich will edit a new supplement "Style and Entertaining," which will debut November 5, 2000. He will also edit entertaining features for the regular weekly magazine beginning Sunday, February 13, 2000. Style and Entertaining will join the other Part 2 sections of the Magazine-- Women's Fashions of The Times, Men's Fashions o f The Times and Home Design--as a twice-yearly publication. "For the first time, Billy's vast knowledge of style, home design and social anthropology will shape a magazine," Spindler says. "He'll approach entertaining as we do fashion, with wit, intelligence and a sharp journalist's mind." Norwich has been a contributor to Fashions of The Times, the editor-at-large at Vogue magazine and an editor-at-large at Conde Nast House & Garden. He wrote an around-the-town column for The New York Daily News until 1991, and then wrote a similar column for the New York Post until 1993. His "Style Diary," a report on fashion, interior design and manners, appears weekly in the New York Observer. His novel, Learning to Drive, was published by Grove/Atlantic in 1996. A children's book he wrote, Molly and the Magical Dress, will be published by Random House in the fall of 2000. Frontline Launches In-Depth Apocalypse Site As the millennium clock ticks down to New Year's eve 1999, this Frontline site tells the story of the roots and evolution of apocalyptic belief and how it has so powerfully shaped Western history. The website is being published in conjunction with Frontline's two-hour program Apocalypse! airing on PBS Monday, November 22 at 9 pm. The website will be available in full on the day of broadcast. PBS Teachersource Relaunches PBS TeacherSource has relaunched, featuring a growing inventory of more than 1,300 free lesson plans, teacher guides and online student activities. The expanded PBS TeacherSource offers new content and features, including easier access to curriculum, professional development and community resources provided by PBS stations across the country. PBS TeacherSource aggregates the services PBS and its member stations provide to educators, and helps teachers learn effective ways to incorporate video and the Internet in the classroom. Most of the site's offerings build on issues addressed by PBS's television programs. PBS TeacherSource groups its resources into five subject areas -- Arts & Literature; Math; Science & Technology; Social Studies; and Health & Fitness -- and offers subject, grade level and keyword searches. "As the largest source of video programming with extended taping rights for educators, PBS is proud to offer a Web site with such an unprecedented array of local and national education resources," said Cari Ladd, PBS director of online education.
