Tuesday, December 28th, 1999 Media Cynic | Forum | Advertising | Classifieds | Jobs Dow Jones & Company to Sell Publishing Entity to Wicks Business Information Dow Jones & Company has announced that it has signed a letter of intent to sell Dow Jones Financial Publishing Corp. to Wicks Business Information, LLC. Dow Jones Financial Publishing Corp. is the publisher of the magazines Investment Advisor, Asset Management and Property and the newsletter Realty Stock Review. Dow Jones decided to sell Dow Jones Financial Publishing as part of its program of divesting non-core assets. The company will record a gain on the sale at the time of closing, which is expected to occur in January 2000. The Jordan, Edmiston Group, Inc. managed this transaction on behalf of Dow Jones. Douglas J. Manoni, President and CEO of Wicks Business Information, said "We are very excited to bring these high-profile titles into our expanding portfolio of financial publications. CliffsNotes.com offers a catalogue of downloadable CliffsNotes titles. The site also offers a choice of free email newsletters that provide daily advice. As downloads or for shipping from the IDGB warehouse, the CliffsNotes literary guides cost $4.99 each and the CliffsNotes lifestyle titles cost $8.99 each. Computec Media to Launch Three Publications in 2000 Computec Media U.S.A., Inc. has announced plans to launch three new publications in 2000. The first publication to be introduced in the new year, MCV Now, will shift current MCV print editorial content to an online-only medium and will provide new features and faster service. Later in the year, the company will also launch two new consumer publications. "When we decided to launch in the U.S., we set very aggressive goals for ourselves to become the leading publisher in computer and video games magazines," said Torsten Oppermann, chief executive officer, Computec Media U.S.A, Inc. "We've already achieved tremendous success with our first two brands, MCV and incite, and now we're taking it one step further, in technology and product extensions, with our three upcoming publications." Christian Svensson, editor-in-chief and chief executive officer of MCV, will lead the launch and establish the MCV Now publication, as well as roll out Computec's two new consumer publications in 2000. Youthline USA Launches Monthly Magazine Supplement Youthline USA, Inc., a multimedia company focused on providing education and entertainment products and services, has announced that it will launch a monthly magazine to supplement its newspaper and website. Each month, Youthline USA will publish a monthly magazine that will feature edutainment content and activities not covered by the company's newspaper. "The magazine represents a way for Youthline USA to tackle much deeper issues than can be covered in the newspaper. Upside Media Adds Five Editors to Magazine Staff Upside Media Inc., publisher of Upside magazine and UpsideToday, has announced an expansion of its print and online staff with the appointments of five editors to Upside magazine, and the planned addition of approximately 18 new writers for UpsideToday. Galen Gruman joins Upside magazine as executive editor. Gruman was previously West Coast bureau chief for Computerworld. Gruman reports to Adrian Mello, editor-in-chief of Upside magazine. Allyson Bates joins the magazine as contributing editor, responsible for tracking industry trends and editing feature articles. After a stint as senior editor at CIO magazine, Howard Baldwin joins Upside as features editor. Cameron Crotty, familiar as an Upside contributing writer, joins the magazine full-time as senior features editor. Deborah Branscum, who has covered technology for such publications as Newsweek, The New York Times and Yahoo! Internet Life, joins as senior contributing editor. Upside Media will strengthen its online presence in the coming weeks with the addition of approximately 18 new writers, editors and Web designers. UpsideToday is also establishing bureaus in Seattle, Los Angeles, Boston, and Raleigh, N.C., in addition to expanding its New York City bureau. To accommodate staff expansion in its San Francisco headquarters, UpsideToday is moving into its own office in January, effectively doubling its current space. KAM's properties address the emerging information technology and business practices sector known as knowledge management. Primedia Appoints Linda Platzner as New Publisher of Seventeen David Tanzer, president and chief executive officer of Primedia Consumer Magazines, has announced the appointment of Linda Platzner, 42, as publisher of Seventeen magazine. Platzner joined Primedia in October as group publisher/vice president of the Primedia Youth Entertainment Group and previously was group publisher of Petersen's Teen magazine and All About You magazine. She succeeds Lori Burgess, who left Primedia in November. According to Tanzer, "Linda is a proven integrated marketer whose charge will be to leverage Seventeen's powerful position in the teen market to deliver big picture marketing programs that will take advantage of Seventeen and Primedia's other teen properties which together reach 90 percent of female teenagers and 75 percent of all teenagers." Collegiatenewswire.com Debuts Online Advance Media Group has announced the debut of collegiatenewswire.com. This new wire service will feature entertainment, fashion, sports and lifestyle articles primarily targeted to college readers. Content for the wire service is written by college students. Current contributors to the site include Advance Media Group's national publications, Collegiate Monthly 101 and Entertainment 101 and one of their partners, Spin Records.com. More specifically, the content will include interviews with film and television stars, sports figures and recording artists, reviews of the latest music and films, sports and fashion coverage of national events and general reflections on college life. Future plans also include adding syndicated information that focuses on college interests and broader national news. Media outlets can access collegiatenewswire.com and download any article they want, for a fee, and reprint them in their own publications.
