EMAP USA Launches FHM

For Him Magazine (FHM) is coming to America. EMAP USA will unveil the U.S. edition of its men's lifestyle magazine, on February 15th. Editor-in-Chief Ed Needham will oversee the launch. By combining various elements such as fashion, sex, health, entertainment, careers, technology and humor, Needham aims to continue the growth of the FHM brand.

Needham explains, ``FHM will present the facts, provoke the mind, arouse the senses and never impose or dictate to the reader. If men can do it, read it, buy it, think about it, or spend their money on it -- they will find it in FHM. We created our publication based on three guiding principles. Everything in the magazine must be one or more of the following: Funny, Sexy, Useful.``

In its early stages, FHM was a fashion trade in the U.K. with a circulation of 60,000. EMAP acquired the publication in 1994 and repositioned the magazine as a general men's lifestyle and fashion magazine with a broader appeal for men. In five years, the circulation jumped to 750,000. Today, FHM maintains a strong fashion focus.

``There is a lot of buzz surrounding the launch of FHM because the men's magazine market is a hot place to be right now,'' says Dana Fields, Executive Publisher and President Men's and Entertainment Group. ``Ten, fifteen years ago the market was very different. Today, men are getting married later in life. They have a disposable income and they are spending it on themselves. They are responsible for their wardrobe. They are furnishing their apartments. They are going out more often. They want to be entertained. They want to be informed. FHM is going to provide them with all of the answers.''
