Sears, Bob Vila to Form Online Joint Venture

Posted on March 3, 2000

Sears, Roebuck and Co. and home improvement guru Bob Vila have announced they will create an online joint venture, called BobVila.com. The new BobVila.com website, which initially will be majority owned by Sears, is expected to be operational in the third quarter of this year. The new online company intends to leverage the assets and expertise of Bob Vila and Sears, while pursuing other partners, to provide home improvement solutions.

``We'll provide complete solutions for do-it-yourselfers, wannabes and do-it-for-me homeowners,'' Bob Vila said. ``We intend to develop the ultimate home improvement resource for consumers, providing everything they need, from ideas and inspiration, to finding the right contractors, tools or materials -- to managing the entire project.''

An initial strategy of the venture will be to utilize Vila's media assets, including insights from his books and 20 years on television. The site will continue to promote and enhance his television program, Bob Vila's Home Again. Vila will be personally involved in providing guidance on the direction of the BobVila.com business -- from development and site design to content. Vila's current Internet site will remain online until later this year, when the new site is introduced.
