Space.com and Hearst Magazines Announce Launch of Space.com Illustrated

Lou Dobbs, chairman and CEO of Space.com and Cathleen P. Black, president of Hearst Magazines, have announced a new custom published magazine entitled Space.com Illustrated. Space.com Illustrated will cover the exploration of space and the quest for the origins of life and our universe. The magazine will also examine discoveries in astronomy and astrophysics, and cover the impact of new knowledge and technologies on contemporary life on Planet Earth.

``We are thrilled to celebrate our first anniversary and extend the reach of our brand with the launch of Space.com Illustrated,'' said Dobbs. ``Like Space.com, Space.com Illustrated is specially designed to appeal to a variety of space fans from occasional moviegoers and backyard stargazers to educators and business people. We are pleased that Hearst Magazines has joined our mission to popularize space.''

``We are very excited to bring Space.com to the printed page, '' said Michael Hurley, director of custom marketing, Hearst Magazines. ``The exploration of space has been and will continue to be a captivating and dynamic enterprise. Space.com Illustrated will be a vital component in supplying the demand readers have for this information above and beyond the Web.''

Anne Mollegen Smith, president of Qwerty Communications, a publishing consulting group, will serve as editor of Space.com Illustrated. Smith directed the launch of Scientific American Explorations and is the former editor-in-chief of Redbook, Working Woman and McCall's magazines.

The new magazine, which will be distributed three times in 2000 by Hearst Distribution Group, will be printed in an oversized format with an initial circulation of 150,000. The cover price will be $2.50 and it will appear on newsstands July 4, 2000. Subscriptions for the magazine will be largely sold through Space.com and other selected venues. Space.com is headquartered in New York City with offices and news bureaus in Cape Canaveral, Houston, Pasadena and Washington, D.C.
