George E. Curry Elected President of American Society of Magazine Editors

George E. Curry, editor-in-chief of Emerge: Black America's Newsmagazine, has been elected president of the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME). He is the first African American and non-New York based editor to hold this post.

Curry is a regular panelist on Lead Story, a news analysis program that airs each Sunday on Black Entertainment Television. Before taking over as editor of Emerge in 1993, Curry served as New York bureau chief and as a Washington correspondent for the Chicago Tribune. Prior to joining the Tribune in 1983, Curry worked for 11 years as a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and for two years as a reporter for Sports Illustrated. Curry is the author of Jake Gaither: America's Most Famous Black Coach (Dodd, Mead & Co., 1977) and editor of The Affirmative Action Debate, (Perseus Books, 1996) an anthology now in its seventh printing.

``George Curry is an extraordinary leader who will take ASME to a new level of impact,'' said Jacqueline Leo, immediate past president of ASME and editor-in-chief, interactive services, Meredith Corporation. ``He sets the high standards that our membership embraces.''

Other officers include Cyndi Stivers, editor-in-chief and president of Time Out New York, who has been elected vice president. Susan Ungaro, editor-in-chief of Family Circle, has been elected secretary, and Mark Whitaker, editor of Newsweek, has been elected treasurer. Each ASME officer is elected for a one-year term and can be nominated for a second one-year term.

The other members of the board who continue to serve their terms are: Richard Babcock, editor, Chicago; Millie Martini Bratten, editor-in-chief, Bride's; Christina Ferrari, managing editor, Teen People; Peter Herbst, editor-in-chief, Family Life, Robert Love, managing editor, Rolling Stone; Chee Pearlman, editor-in-chief, One Ventures, Inc.; Ellis Rubinstein, editor, Science Magazine; Alan Webber, co-founding editor, Fast Company; and Kate White, editor-in-chief, Cosmopolitan. Jacqueline Leo, editor-in-chief, interactive services, Meredith Corporation remains on the board ex-officio.

The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) is a non-profit professional organization for chief and senior editors of consumer magazines, which are edited, published and sold in the U.S. ASME provides an opportunity for magazine editors to meet with their peers for the exchange of information on matters of mutual interest. ASME sponsors the National Magazine Awards, the prestigious program that honors editorial excellence in magazines, and the Magazine Internship Program, which places about 40 to 50 college juniors at national magazines for ten-weeks each summer.
