Posted on July 10, 2000

Hearst Magazines President Cathleen P. Black has announced that Amy Gross has been appointed editor-in-chief of O, The Oprah Magazine, the co-venture between Harpo Entertainment Group and Hearst Magazines. Gross replaces Ellen Kunes, who stepped down from the editorship last month. Gross begins her new position on Monday, July 17.

``I am very pleased that Amy Gross is joining us,'' said Oprah Winfrey. ``She is one of the most respected editors in the women's magazine field, and I look forward to working with her on making O the best magazine for women who are exploring personal growth.''

``Oprah is about energy, generosity, a can-do American optimism paired with the will to give others a leg up where needed,'' said Gross. ``She's a force for good and on top of that, she's fun. I'm tremendously excited to be working with her on translating those qualities into magazine form. The magazine has had a great start so it is truly a wonderful privilege to have the opportunity to take it forward.''

The debut issue of O sold out on newsstands with a distribution of 1.5 million copies. Effective with the September 2000 issue, the magazine will begin monthly frequency and will increase its circulation rate base to 900,000, an increase of 80 percent, from the initial 500,000 rate base.

Before joining O, The Oprah Magazine, Gross was a writer for a wide variety of magazines, including Good Housekeeping, Martha Stewart Living, Food & Wine, Talk, Mademoiselle and Modern Maturity, where she also served as an editorial consultant. From 1988-1993 she was a founding editor of Mirabella. She went on to serve as Mirabella's editor-in-chief from 1995-1997. She also concurrently served as editorial director of Elle magazine from 1993-1996, overseeing its redesign. Earlier, Gross was features editor and special projects editor of Vogue, where she worked for 10 years (1978-1988).
