Away.com Acquires Outdoor Adventure Online

Posted on July 26, 2000

Away.com, an online travel resource, has announced the acquisition of Outdoor Adventure Online (OAO). OAO, an adventure travel resource on AOL from 1994-1999, brings Away.com thousands of pages of content, including online distribution rights to the Ultimate Adventure Sourcebook, an adventure travel guide. Away.com also announced the appointment of OAO creator and Sourcebook author Paul McMenamin as Vice President, Adventure.

In making the announcement, Sean Greene, Away.com's founder and CEO, said, ``We are thrilled to have Paul join the Away.com team. The Sourcebook is the adventurer's bible. Many consider it the ultimate resource for active travelers. His experience and knowledge, coupled with the wealth of information the Sourcebook represents, is a fitting addition to Away.com's library of best-in-class adventure travel content.''

An avid sailor, scuba diver, windsurfer, mountain biker and motorcyclist, McMenamin has tried his hand at nearly all the sports featured in the Sourcebook. McMenamin was chosen by the National Geographic Society to author the new National Geographic Ultimate Adventure Sourcebook, which was released nationwide last month.

Following the publication of the original Sourcebook, McMenamin contracted with AOL to create Outdoor Adventure Online, an adventure travel and recreation information service that served over 2.5 million users since its launch. He has appeared on television talk shows, and has been a featured guest on numerous radio programs, including National Public Radio. McMenamin has been a guest columnist for Westways Magazine, and is a frequent contributor to national newspapers and outdoor magazines.
