Technology Execs Turn to Trades and Internet for News

How do technology executives keep up-to-date on the latest trends? In a recent poll, 39 percent of chief information officers (CIOs) said trade magazines are their preferred source for technology news. One-third (33 percent) of respondents ranked the Internet as their favorite destination for industry updates.

The survey was developed by RHI Consulting, a consulting firm that provides information technology professionals on a project and full-time basis. It was conducted by an independent research firm and includes responses from 1,400 CIOs from a stratified random sample of U.S. companies with more than 100 employees.

CIOs were asked, ``Which of the following is your main source for the latest technology news?'' Their responses:
Industry magazines 39%
Internet 33%
Communication with colleagues 17%
Newspapers 5%
TV 3%
Radio 1%
Other 1%
Don't know/no answer 1%

CIOs who prefer the Internet to other media outlets selected Microsoft.com (18 percent) as the web page they frequent most for news. Additional sites listed by executives included Yahoo.com, ZDNet.com, MSN.com, CNET.com and Computerworld.com.
