Variety Launches New Monthly, eV

Posted on September 13, 2000

Variety, an entertainment industry newspaper, has announced the September 21 launch of a new monthly magazine, eV. The publication will feature editorial content about the converging worlds of show business, technology and finance. Variety, founded in 1905, is a publication of Cahners Business Information, a division of Reed-Elsevier Inc. eV will compete with a print magazine covering similar topics that is soon to be launched by Inside.com and The Industry Standard.

``New media impacts every facet of the industry, from our readers to our advertisers,'' said eV publisher Michael Evans. ``Within the pages of eV, and in daily online postings from eV's editorial staff, we will offer perspective, insight, the latest word on important trends, technology updates, content creation and distribution, and more.''

Michael Speier, eV's editor, supervises an editorial team with reporters stationed in Los Angeles, New York and London. ``There's a lot of angst in this business about which companies and which technologies will be around tomorrow. Readers may not always like what we have to say, but they'll certainly need to know it,'' he said.

eV's coverage and focus will include film, television, music, emerging technologies and publishing. The magazine will also provide content about companies and personalities involved in new media. eV's projected circulation is 55,000 readers. eV will also be the online home for all Variety technology coverage and will be found in a sub-site of Variety.com. The site will feature daily updates, breaking news, scoops and house features not found in any Variety print publication.

``We have the advantage of an intimate knowledge of our marketplace. We know the questions and concerns our readers have and have built a publication that answers them. This is what the media business has come to expect from Variety publications,'' added Variety Group VP & Publisher Charles Koones.
