Frederick Forsyth Signs Ebook Deal With Online Originals

Posted on September 20, 2000

Online Originals, a UK eBook publisher, has announced that it has signed a deal with author, Frederick Forsyth, to publish a series of five new stories, collectively entitled ‘Quintet’, exclusively on the internet. The deal was agreed through his literary agent, Ed Victor.

The stories will be launched from the Online Originals website and via major online bookstores. The first two in the series, ‘The Veteran’ and ‘The Miracle’, will be published sequentially in October to coincide with the Frankfurt Book Fair. After the five stories have been published individually, the series will be released as an eBook collection.

About the ebooks Frederick Forsyth said, “Having been writing since 1970 I consider myself something of a veteran author, and I believe that the advent of eBooks is one of the most exciting developments in my experience as a professional writer. It offers the author a whole range of new opportunities and freedom. It’s with great excitement and anticipation that I’m launching this series of stories electronically with Online Originals.”

About signing Forsyth, Phil Rance, managing director of Online Originals, said, "Frederick Forsyth’s decision to publish these new stories as eBook exclusives is a landmark moment in the development of publishing. No other internationally bestselling author has published new works in this way other than Stephen King. This will be a major step towards consumer acceptance of eBooks. With rapid developments in handheld technology, and authors of Frederick’s calibre being lured online, we predict a growth in appetite for eBooks and a shift in power away from traditional publishing. We are delighted that he has chosen Online Originals."

Last week Online Originals announced their nominations for the new Frankfurt eBook prize, where a prize of US$100,000 is being offered for the best original eBook. Online Originals was founded early in the history of eBook publishing in 1996. Online Originals found early success when author Patricia le Roy became the first electronically published work to be nominated for a major literary prize (The Booker, 1998) with The Angels of Russia.
