Stealth Press Announces New Publishing Model

Posted on November 2, 2000

Stealth Press has announced its first group of titles and an ambitious publishing agenda after more than a year of preparation. Stealth Press publishes high-quality hardcover editions of popular books that are currently out of print, selling directly to readers via the Internet. Stealth Press points out that is different from most Internet publishers, or epublishers, because it does not publish print-on-demand books, electronic books or even books by new authors. Instead, Stealth focuses on bringing out-of-print books by established authors back into print in hardcover editions.

The initial four releases include the first U.S. hardcover publication of horror novel Morningstar by British author/screenwriter (Hellraiser, Wishmaster) Peter Atkins; the bestselling Jim Mundy by Robert Fowler; Under Venus, a literary novel by Peter Straub (Ghost Story, Mr. X) who is currently co-authoring a sequel to their bestseller, The Talisman, with Stephen King; and the Pulitzer Prize-nominated novel of peace and war, love and hate -- The Valkyrie Mandate by Robert Vaughan.

According to Editor-in-Chief Patrick LoBrutto, ``Stealth Press is the solution to what many see as the elimination of the `mid-list' in contemporary publishing. Book publishing has become an `instant hits' business where publishers are more concerned with immediate bestseller status than with building author audience share and long-term success. Many good books have been taken out of print not because they were not selling, but because they were not selling enough. Stealth has provided a new opportunity for those unjustly-killed books to be bought, read, and loved by readers.''

LoBrutto continued, ``We think it's important to point out that Stealth is not interested in e-book publishing, vanity publishing, print-on-demand publishing, or any of the other attempts to graft the new economy onto the traditional publishing business. Unlike most new publishing entities, Stealth's model is to take good books and publish them attractively in long- lasting hardcover editions. We are also extremely `author friendly,' including authors in creative decisions and in corporate profits. Our use of the Internet is to forge a tighter link between authors and readers and to sell directly to those readers.''
