Sickbay Health Media Inc. has announced that it has relaunched its web properties sickbay.com, a health information site, netsweat.com, a fitness portal, and healthline.com, a companion ezine based upon the company's publication Healthline magazine. DevX, an online resource for corporate IT developers, has announced a comprehensive branding campaign as it debuted its new site design, corporate identity and the company's first major advertising campaign. Graeme Roberts has joined just-auto.com, an online automotive magazine for industry professionals, as its new deputy editor. Originally from New Zealand, Graeme worked as the motoring editor of a regional daily before moving to the UK in 1987 and taking the role of launch deputy editor of Diesel Car magazine. In addition, Stephen Hynes has been appointed Partner Manager for just-auto.com. eUniverse, an interactive entertainment network, has partnered with Kick Media, an online publishing network for youth titles, to develop and distribute branded newsletters. Seventeen.com has announced the launch of Samantha Seventeen, an animated computer personality, as a tour guide for its newly designed website as well as the web itself. Samantha Seventeen was created exclusively for Seventeen.com by the ScreenFriends Corporation. Salon.com celebrated its fifth anniversary on Monday, November 20th. Launched in November 1995, the site has grown from a weekly arts and literature ezine into an Internet news and entertainment site, with over 2.6 million unique users and 45 million page views per month. However, the stock price for Salon.com trades at just slightly over $1 per share. The Gale Group, a business unit of The Thomson Corporation, has assumed ownership of kids website FreeZone.com. FreeZone.com was a division of Flywheel Media, another division of The Thomson Corporation. The transfer of ownership from Flywheel Media to the Gale Group was completed on October 18, 2000. FreeZone will continue its operations from its headquarters in Chicago, which houses the site's ``chat jockeys.'' Chat jockeys are specially trained on-site adult employees who monitor all interactive elements of the site, including chat rooms, bulletin boards and home pages. Thomas Watson has been named National Affairs editor, Newsweek Editor Mark Whitaker recently announced. Yack, a guide to live online events, will distribute its online events listings to the 4Anything Network's network of topical channels. Pohly & Partners, a Boston-based custom publisher, has announced the launch of its new online division, ONCORE (ONline COntent REsource), a content provider that aims to maximize the link between publishing and relationship marketing in an online environment. Yahoo! Internet Life, a consumer lifestyle magazine covering the Internet, now boasts an audience of 5.3 million readers monthly according to the 2000 MRI Fall Study, released November 16. BankersOnline.com, a collection of banking resources for financial professionals with a digital archive of over 5,000 articles was recently launched by Bankers Online. Corporations in the United States increased their year-to-year custom publishing volume by 34.4 percent, according to the recently released second annual survey ``Custom Publishing Trends Among America's Top Companies'' conducted by the twice-monthly newsletter Publications Management. Cahners Business Information, a provider of business-to-business information, has acquired the graphic arts, packaging, printing, design and publishing business of TrendWatch, a market research and strategy firm. Themestream, an enthusiast resource, has announced the appointment of Joe Cellini to the post of vice president of editorial. Cellini, who comes to Themestream from Onscreen24, has over twenty years of editorial experience. Cellini will report directly to Daniel McCarthy, president and chief executive officer, and will be responsible for overseeing the company's editorial and content strategies. BizSpace, Inc., an online business-to-business publishing company, has raised a third round of financing. The company has raised $1.2 million in a new venture financing round, led by the St. Joseph News-Press & Gazette Co., which was a significant participant in the firm's Series A financing round last January. Other Series A funders also have invested in the newest round, as well as several new investors. Early Tuesday (11-21-00) morning, members of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild labor union walked off their jobs and began a strike against The Seattle Times Company. The company will continue to publish newspapers, according to Seattle Times President Mason Sizemore. Microsoft Corp. signed an agreement with Pulse Data International Ltd. that will provide the visually impaired with access to thousands of new and existing electronic books. Pulse Data, a specialist in enabling access to information for the visually impaired, will collaborate with Microsoft in delivering a blind-friendly interface for ebooks created for Microsoft Reader. The Ackerley Group, a media and entertainment company, has announced the launch of the iKnow Network, a group of independent local news and information portal sites created through partnerships between the company's iKnow Network, local television stations and other local media companies. The Ackerley Group will roll out its iKnow Network platform initially in its television markets in 2001, beginning on the West coast. Microsoft Corp. has loaned $12 million, interest free, to troubled Web integrator MarchFirst, according to reporting by Sm@rt Partner. CNET has launched CNET Webware.com, a resource that combines a directory of Web-hosted products and services with information that helps users figure out which one best suits their personal and business needs. Edmunds.com, a consumer resource for automotive information, has promoted members of its executive management team. Effective immediately, Peter Steinlauf will become the company's first Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, Jeremy Anwyl its President, and Bob Thomas its Chief Operating Officer. Belo announced that it has reached an agreement to sell the Messenger-Inquirer in Owensboro, Kentucky to Paxton Media Group, Inc. Barnes & Noble, Inc. has clarified company statements concerning discussions with Gemstar TV Guide. While no action at the present time is contemplated, the company has had and intends to continue to have discussions with Gemstar concerning a range of possible relationships, including the development of ebook strategies and a variety of possible business combinations.
