New Look for The Writer Magazine

Posted on December 1, 2000

The Writer, a magazine for writers, will introduce expanded content and a new look with its January 2001 issue. The magazine was created in Boston in 1887 and published there until recently, when it was acquired by Kalmbach Publishing Co., a publisher of leisure-time and hobby magazines.

Along with the new design, The Writer will continue its long tradition of providing information to writers, including advice, interviews with writers, and how-to articles on fiction, non fiction, poetry, and children's/young adult literature. It also will feature tips from bestselling authors, such as PEN/Ernest Hemingway Award winner Jane Hamilton and National Book Award-winner Ha Jin.

"We're presenting The Writer in a fresh, new format," says Editor Elfrieda M. Abbe, "But we're mindful of our long tradition of promoting good writing, which is the magazine's heart and soul."

The Writer also will introduce several new columns. "Net//working" offers news and information about e-publishing and the Internet. "Ethics" is a forum for ethical topics of interest to writers and editors. "Bottom Line" provides tips and guidelines to help writers earn money from their work. "Dear Writer" answers writers’ most frequently asked questions. "WriteStuff" includes reviews and previews of books, films, tapes and products of interest to writers. "Writers Wanted" is an expanded list of markets for writers, and "How I Write" is where established writers reveal their writing techniques and work habits.

In addition to The Writer, Kalmbach Publishing Co., publishes 13 other magazines, over 250 books and other products, and employs nearly 300 people. Kalmbach's main offices are located at 21027 Crossroads Circle, Waukesha, WI, with a satellite office in Sykesville, MD.
