Bookface.com, a provider of online reading technology, has ceased operations citing adverse economic conditions. The company was unable to raise additional financing. Bookface.com, was launched in June 2000 with the involvement of many prominent publishers. During its six-months of operation, Bookface.com acquired the nonexclusive rights for free online display to over 2,000 titles. As a last tribute, Lou Anders, Bookface Executive Editor, has arranged an anthology of short story fiction from the website to be released in the traditional paper and ink format. Outside the Box: The Best Short Fiction from Bookface.com will be released in March 2001 from Wildside Press.

eWanted.com, a reverse auction site, announced it has entered into a relationship with Ask Jeeves, a question answering search service, to offer Ask Jeeves users additional resources for products and services they want.

Triangle Publishing Services Co. Inc., a content provider of print and multimedia-based business and technology editorial, circulation and sales/marketing support has announced the appointment of Evan Schuman as VP/Editor-in-Chief.

A Biography of America, a new educational television and video series from Annenberg/CPB, announced the launch of its companion website based on the twenty-six episode series, which presents American history as a living narrative. The goal of the site, as with the series, is to promote critical thinking skills among teachers and students—skills historians consider crucial to understanding the complex process of how "history" is written.

Foliofn, a financial services company, announced that financial columnist James K. Glassman has launched a new, original column exclusively for Foliofn. Glassman's column will examine the latest financial developments and investment strategies and provide information and education on general matters affecting investors. The column, which will appear weekly, will be available exclusively on Foliofn's website.

Brad Hurd, a 21-year veteran of Lee Enterprises, has been appointed publisher of the Independent Record in Montana's capital city. Greg Veon, Lee Enterprises vice president for publishing, said Hurd also will continue to have responsibility for Lee's magazine and book publishing division. Hurd has been general manager or publisher of Montana Magazine and Farcountry Press, also based in Helena, since 1994.

CNET Networks, Inc. announced that it has hired industry analyst David Coursey as Executive Editor and lead columnist for its AnchorDesk Email Alert and companion website. Coursey replaces AnchorDesk founder Jesse Berst, who is leaving on January 26 to start his own company, IV.com.

ISI Publications, a publisher of specialty financial and ecommerce books, has launched an on-line bookstore selling difficult-to-find business books from other specialty publishers as well as ISI's titles. The bookstore is located at www.booksonbiz.com.

Eleanor Dixson-Hobbs has been named Publisher for American Banker. She is the first woman to head the 165 year-old daily newspaper, as well as the first African-American in the role. American Banker, which has a readership of over 130,000, provides coverage of the financial service industry.

Members of the Newspaper Guild-CWA Local 37082 ratified new contracts with the Seattle Times, ending a nearly seven-week strike by some 800 newspaper workers. Editorial, advertising and circulation workers ratified the six-year agreement by a 3 to 1 margin. In a separate vote, workers in the composing room, members of the Printing, Publishing and Media Workers sector of CWA, ratified their contract by a similar margin. The strike by more than 900 workers at the Seattle Times and the Post-Intelligencer began on Nov. 21. The two papers are owned separately but publish under a joint operating agreement and negotiate in tandem with TNG-CWA. Workers at the Post-Intelligencer ratified a separate contract Dec. 27-28 and returned to work Jan. 2.

David J. Jefferson was named Newsweek West Coast editor, it was announced by Editor Mark Whitaker. Jefferson joins Newsweek's Los Angeles bureau in February and will report to Mark Miller, chief of correspondents, who most recently held the post. As West Coast editor, Jefferson will be responsible for running the magazine's Los Angeles bureau and its six-member staff.

Reciprocal Inc. and Qpass, provides of digital rights management (DRM) and digital commerce services, have announced an agreement that will provide media companies and other content owners with a fully-outsourced solution for the secure distribution and sale of DRM-protected content online. The integrated service offering, which will be available to both current Qpass content partners and new customers, combines the Qpass Digital Commerce Service with the Reciprocal Digital Clearing Service.

Arrangeonline.com, a publisher of online obituaries, announced it has acquired WebObits.com, another online obituary publisher.

Cygnus Business Media, a business-to-business communications company, announced the appointment of Richard Reiff to oversee the Cygnus Publishing Division as its President, reporting to President and CEO Paul Mackler. Mackler is also president of Cygnus' parent company CommerceConnect Media. In addition to directing the efforts of Group Vice Presidents Pat Nadler and Mike Martin, Reiff will also manage the operations of the circulation department headed by Scott Cravens and manufacturing headed by Tom Martin. Along with the appointment of Reiff, several publishers are receiving promotions to group publishers as part of the portfolio realignment strategy. They include Pat Bernardo, Dave Davel, Paul Bowers, Kathy Marr, Tony Dellamaria, Bob Stange, Eliot Sefrin, Jann Levesque, Patrick Henry, Dan Newman and Steve Ryan.

Scholastic announced that it has acquired the rights to Pfeifer-Hamilton's children's line. The deal involves nine titles including the award-winning books, Old Turtle and The Quiltmaker's Gift. Effective February 15, 2001, all nine books will be published under the Scholastic Press imprint.

Moving.com, a relocation portal, has forged a content partnership with theglobe.com. Moving.com will be a content provider for theglobe.com's real estate section.

Boston Globe Chairman and Publisher Richard H. Gilman announced the appointment of Richard J. Daniels as president of Globe Newspaper Company, effective February 16. The announcement was made following the decision by William B. Huff, a 25-year veteran of the company and president since 1998, to retire early from the Globe to pursue other opportunities and interests, including involvement in a range of community service programs and projects.

CMP Media Inc., a provider of tech news and information, announced that Robert Faletra has been named President of the Technology Solutions Group (TSG). In his new role, Faletra will be responsible for sales, marketing, editorial and business development initiatives for the TSG, which provides news and analysis for solution providers, integrators and ebusinesses. CRN, varBusiness, ChannelWeb, Reality Research and the XChange Conference Group are the TSG's industry leading products. Faletra will be replacing Pam Watkins who is taking a leave of absence.

Steamtunnels, a weekly college magazine with over 2 million in circulation, announced that technology columnist Alice Hill will begin contributing to the magazine. Covering technology trends of interest to college students, Hill's column will appear in Steamtunnels every other issue. A veteran tech journalist, Hill was Vice President of Development and Editorial Director at CNET, where she launched gamecenter.com and wrote a weekly column with over 2 million readers.

Advanstar's Telecom Community announced the appointment of Joan Engebretson as chief editor of America's Network magazine as part of an ongoing expansion to strengthen the America's Network editorial team.

British media company Haymarket Publishing Ltd. expanded its consumer magazine operations into the U.S. last week by acquiring a controlling stake in the California-based Racer Communications, Inc. The purchase places Racer, a general interest motorsport magazine, under the same umbrella as Haymarket's Autosport, Britain's bestselling motorsport weekly and F1 Racing, a Formula One magazine.

Veteran publishing executive Mark Glasner has joined Interactive Week as national associate publisher. In this role, Glasner will have full responsibility for all of the Internet newspaper's day-to-day sales operations. Before joining Interactive Week, he was vice president for global accounts with CMP Media. Previously, Glasner was network director for Ziff-Davis.

Crosswalk.com, Inc., an Internet portal serving the Christian community, announced the implementation of a company restructuring which includes the appointment of Scott Fehrenbacher as President, CEO and director, succeeding William Parker.

Jodi Vevoda, formerly regional advertising director, USA Weekend magazine, has been named vice president, advertising sales for USA Today.

SportsLine.com, Inc., an Internet sports media company, has hired a senior writer to enhance its coverage of college basketball. Dan Wetzel joins SportsLine.com, publisher of CBS SportsLine.com, from the basketball website HoopsTV.com, where he served as its national college basketball writer for the past year. Previously, Wetzel was the managing editor for Basketball Times, where he published columns and features.

Thomson Financial, a provider of information services and work solutions to the financial community, has launched a new weekly publication, Asset Securitization Report.

WineryExchange.com, an online marketplace for the wine industry, has formed a strategic alliance with Euromonitor, a provider of global market information for dozens of industries, including wine, distilled sprits and beer. WineryExchange will soon offer online access through its website to Euromonitor's international wine market reports, including market-by-market sector trends, brand growth and strategies, corporate profiles and corporate strategies.

McGraw-Hill Education has announced the launch of The McGraw-Hill Learning Network (MHLN.com), for the pre-K through 12th grade. MHLN.com is an integrated network of complete, interactive online e-textbooks, plus a suite of support resources for teachers, administrators, students, and families.

Snowball.com, an online network for young adults, announced that it is reducing its workforce by approximately 20 percent.

audiohighway.com, which offers free audio content, has filed for chapter 11 protection.
