IEEE Spectrum Magazine Announces Relaunch

Posted on January 17, 2001

IEEE Spectrum Magazine has launched a repositioned and redesigned publication with its January 2001 technology forecast issue, entitled "Always On: Living in a Networked World". Spectrum is the flagship publication of the IEEE (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.) and is read by its more than 360,000 members. For the first time IEEE Spectrum will also be available to non-IEEE members.

As IEEE Spectrum Editor Susan Hassler said: "Spectrum will continue to offer comprehensive, insider information on important new technology developments. The makeover---making that information more accessible--reflects our readers' changing information needs. Because their lives are very busy, they need a magazine that is faster and easier to read."

"Spectrum understands that our expert readers are no longer 'experts' when they are reading outside their fields. And so we write, edit and report on complicated technologies in a way that gives our readers 'the big picture.' At the same time, we know our readers are critical thinkers. So we provide them with the details they need but can't find in the business or consumer press. We also hope to capture the exhilaration and satisfaction that comes from solving problems in technology and engineering. This intellectual excitement is, after all, the reason most of us got involved in the first place," Hassler said.

Spectrum covers everything from space to computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, consumer electronics, and energy and the environment.

"Under the editorial leadership of Susan Hassler, the publication is positioning itself as a leader in a new technology magazine niche within the broader segment of new economy business books" said Jim Vick, Spectrum publisher. "This new niche recognizes the need for reliable, comprehensive, in-depth technology information that is accessible and fast-paced, with pragmatic analysis useful in making business and marketplace decisions."
