Linux Weekly will initially be published on the first and the fifteenth of each month and a 24 times per year schedule. Starting in October 2001, the tabloid will be published weekly, and will also be available on the newsstands in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland under the name Linux Woche. Altavista is cutting 25% of its staff on Thursday according to Reuters. Altavista now has 600 remaining employees. Michael Agovino has been named deputy editor of Newsweek's website Newsweek.MSNBC.com and Arlene Getz has been named international editor of the site, website Senior Editor Deidre Depke recently announced. Agovino will be responsible for generating story ideas, editing copy and monitoring the news and will be a liaison with Newsweek's MSNBC partners. Prior to joining Newsweek, Agovino was an editor at Esquire magazine for almost eight years. Most recently, he was an editor at ABCNEWS.com. In her new post, Getz will work with Newsweek's foreign correspondents and Foreign Editor Michael Hirsh. Her first task will be to reinvent the international news section on the website and expand its international news coverage. She will continue to write and edit stories. Getz joined Newsweek.com in October 1998 as a writer and editor in political and foreign news coverage. Reuters reported that NBCi has cut 150 position or 30% of its workforce. Bloomberg.com unveiled an expanded Tech Center whose pages will focus on specific types of tech stocks. Bloomberg.com will now offer data and information on five specific categories of tech stocks, according to David Wachtel, publisher of Bloomberg Media: Computer Hardware, Telecom Equipment, Internet, Software and Telecom Services. Bloomberg.com received 185 million page views in November 2000 and ranks among the top five financial news sites, according to Nielson/Ipro. Margery Gladstone, president of Primedia's Modern Bride Group, announced the appointment of the senior management team that will drive the integration of the Modern Bride Group, which includes Modern Bride magazine, ModernBride.com, and Modern Bride Connections, a series of 16 regional bridal titles. Robyn Borok is joining the National Modern Bride team as National Co-Publisher, where she'll work closely with the Bridal Co-Publisher Roger Antin. Additionally, Steve Portnoy will be rejoining Modern Bride Connection as Vice President Publisher of Modern Bride Connection and Internet Sales. Portnoy will be joined there by Eric Siles, who will have the position of Advertising Director Modern Bride Connection and Internet sales. Robyn Borok will be focussing on general ad categories, while Antin will continue to work in the bridal and related categories. Borok joins Primedia after a year and a half at iVillage.com and prior to that, she spent 8 years at The Reader's Digest Company where she was most recently the Associate Publisher of American Health magazine. Steve Portnoy, who created Modern Bride Connections in 1986, most recently worked at ModernBride.com. Portnoy sold Modern Bride Connections to Primedia in 1996 and stayed on as Publisher until 1998. VNU, an international media and information company, announced that its VNU Business Publishing Europe division has acquired the publishing activities of Gruppo Pubblicita Italia. The company produces publications and organizes industry events for the advertising, marketing and media industries. The acquisition includes the weekly Pubblicita Italia, the monthly Pubblicita Italia Net, the daily newsletter Today Pubblicita Italia and the yearbooks and directories Guida Agenzie, Guida Marketing, Media Book Italia and Chi e delle Pubblicita. The Internet Group of CMP Media Inc., a provider of technology news and information announced the launch of TechReviews.com. TechReviews consolidates CMP's library of product reviews that appear in its print and online publications and community sites including InformationWeek, CRN, InternetWeek, Network Computing, and Winmag. Key partners at launch include BugNet, which will provide bug solutions and fixes and Doculabs, which will offer reports on emerging technologies. CondeNet announced that Susan Rerat has joined Epicurious as managing director. Rerat oversees all business development for Epicurious, an online food destination and the home of Gourmet and Bon Appetit magazines. Rerat is the founding publisher of Vogue Russia and has spent the last three years working in the Paris and Moscow offices of Conde Nast International. Rerat served as the associate publisher of Bon Appetit, and as the advertising director of House and Garden. Pulitzer Inc. announced that Henry Bird has been named publisher of The Pantagraph, its daily newspaper in Bloomington, effective January 20. Bird replaces the current publisher, Don Skaggs, who is retiring. Bird, 51, previously was president and publisher of The Muncie Star Press in Muncie, Ind. GoCityKids, an online city directory for parents, announced the launch of its Los Angeles and Boston sites. The cities join San Francisco, New York City, and San Diego, which debuted in early October. Ten more city directories are being planned for this year, including Washington, DC, Chicago, and Miami. Dede Gardner has been promoted to senior vice president of production for the Motion Picture Group of Paramount Pictures, it was announced by Michelle Manning, president of production for the group, to whom Gardner will continue to report. Paramount Pictures is part of Viacom Inc. Before joining Paramount Pictures, Gardner had worked with Joni Evans in the William Morris Agency's literary department in New York since 1994. Prior to that, she worked for Scott Landis at Innovative Artists, based in New York. Nickelodeon and Nick.com have announced BubbleCast. an interactive TV/online game experience for kids. BubbleCast debuts February 5, 2001. BubbleCast is an online game designed for kids to play on their computers as they watch Nickelodeon TV shows. BubbleCast will premiere on-air and online during Rugrats at 4 p.m. (ET/PT), which airs weekdays within the network's afternoon programming block, Slime Time Live. Kozmo.com and The New York Times announced an agreement to provide delivery of The New York Times during a four-week trial to homes and offices of Kozmo customers in nine cities nationwide. Kozmo customers will be able to order The New York Times at the newsstand price and have it delivered on an as-needed basis within one hour. Kozmo serves nine cities: Atlanta; Boston; Chicago; Los Angeles; New York; Portland, Ore.; San Francisco; Seattle; and Washington, D.C. booktech.com has partnered with the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) to provide custom publishing and digital content for the Association's publishing programs and services to members. USDLA is an industry association for distance learning. Walmart.com announced that it has acquired the content assets of Garden.com, an online retailer of gardening products which announced on Nov. 15, 2000 that it would be closing its doors. The assets include Garden.com's editorial, interactive and film content. Walmart.com says it will look for ways to integrate parts of the content into Wal-Mart's garden centers nationwide as well as, on a limited basis, into the Walmart.com site this year, with fuller integration into the site next year. Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion announced the appointment of Riva (Bunny) M. Fensterheim as publisher, effective immediately. Fensterheim will be based in New York and oversee advertising sales, public relations, research and marketing activities for the magazine. She succeeds Deborah DuCharme who left in December to pursue other opportunities.
